Anyone else surprised at how upset they are personally by this Kobe news?

I personally thought the guy was a piece of shite morally and openly rooted against his Lakers pretty much 100% of the time. BUT he absolutely was one of the toughest, hardest working athletes of our generation. I also loved how the dude flat out did not flop.

But man, this shite really got to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a dad and you could really tell how much fun he was having being a father, parent-coach, mentor, etc.

The whole thing really sucks. It would have been fun and fascinating to watch Gigi grow up as the female protege of one of the NBA’s best.

Wasn't his legacy in basketball that made me upset, it was his drive to be an incredible father to four girls that hit me the hardest. This sucks.

I will get downvoted, but I dont care

I am personally surprised by how many people are "truly upset" about this

Yes its sad and yes it made me think about my kids when it happened, but nothing much more than that. Kobe was a person on tv for me. I am not going to pretend to be hurting like a family member or friend

Truthfully, I think it likely kinda pissed some actual family and friends off when people react like this for celebrities

downvote away

Yeah usually I'm unmoved by celebrity deaths, but this one has me shaken. Maybe it is because he was really the first superstar I followed as a kid and kept up with until his retirement. It's extra sad that his daughter died as well. On top of that, the suddenness of it, the way the news broke, and the way it was spread, made it feel surreal.

I do think he was probably not the most well liked as a player
I remember watching the big retirement deal his last game thinking this guy really was a headache and prima donna

But seeing him in retirement and how he seemed to be embracing his kids and family was impressive to see at that stage of his life and the biggest thing I looked at was how he was embracing his daughter. Can't imagine losing a child like that.

Well of course it pales in comparison to losing either of those.

But that’s kinda the point of the thread: I’m truly surprised I’m upset.

See, what does this mean? He was being a dad. Why is "that so impressive?"

In a way I'm with you. Someone said he was the equivalent to Princess Diana to the sports world and I spit my water out.

He was a great basketball player, and should be missed by those who were close to him. He was doing great things for youth women's basketball as well, and that is something he should be lauded for.

To the average person, we should remember that 5 non-Bryants died in that crash as well, and we should recognize that life can change in an instant and to cherish it.

I'm with you, while it's a horribly sad situation it doesn't really impact me in any way. I didn't know Kobe.

I do enjoy all the random girls on Instagram posting Kobe quotes like they are devastated but don't even know if he still plays in the NBA or not

I was never a big Kobe fan like others by I always had the utmost respect for him.

While I'm not particularly upset to the point of crying, yesterday was just a weird day. He was one of those dudes I could see being in everything outside of basketball.

I imagined him being on NBA broadcasts for decades to come and it's strange to think that'll never happen.

I think most people are "truly upset" about it because they were just flat-out shocked to hear the news and the lull we had between it breaking from TMZ (most people didn't want to believe it) then finally being confirmed by more legit outlets. That, coupled with the fact that his daughter, her teammates, and teammates' parents were also on the flight just carried it to a new level. Yesterday I found myself being more impacted than today, though I still feel for all involved just as greatly.

When children are involved, deaths like this become extremely sensitive. While still in the public eye, Kobe Bryant spoke at length how content he was with retirement, including the joy he got from being a father. It's shitty that this part of his life was cut so soon. Don't think you need to tell people how to feel.

I don’t usually care much about celebrity deaths, but I’m surprised at how much this one hit me.

I don’t know why. I can’t explain it. But this one was a punch in the gut.

Yeah the fact his daughter perished AND they were heading to basketball activities related to her team is what makes it almost personal.

So many of us can relate to the hustle and bustle of getting kids from home to practice/game.

my uncle died as well yesterday.

My uncle was sorta a pos who had 9 lives. When Kobe died, everything froze. Kobe is the reason I played basketball. Kobe was the only player Id watch in the NBA. Ive never been a fan of the NBA, but would always tune in to watch Kobe. Kobe's competitive edge was contagious, made everyone around him work harder in all aspects of life.

Very weird you respond to my quote talking about "how impressive it was" about kobe being a dad
