I had a similar conversation a few years ago about Leonard Fournette. Some idiot kept on trying to convince me that his name was pronounced 4-nay.
I said if his momma call him 4-net ima call him 4-net

It always amazes me how much some people get French pronounciations wrong, as your encounter shows.

Fornet would be for-nay. But a word that ends with “nette” would never be pronounced “nay.” The t would be pronounced in Fournette, and the e preceding the t would be an “eh” sound, not an “ay.”

Basic French pronunciations aren’t that hard. They follow a pattern, although even in Louisiana, the patterns get ignored for some names by custom and tradition.

Not at all. If you'd ever bring your yankee arse to BR for a game I'd tell you at the Welsh tailgate

Bruh, I've been trying to for the last 3 years. Almost made it to the Auburn game but it didn't work out.

Eee-tee-yan. But say it fast and don’t linger on the last sound. Almost like an old man saying “eh”.

Any of you old folks remember Leroy Etienne from the 80s? From New Iberia, if I recall? Big recruiting battle.....best player in the state that everybody felt like we had to keep at home......and he went to Nebraska. Big loss. That one hurt.

My last name is like this. Not pronounced the way it should be in French because of Louisiana custom/tradition. Doesn't stop everyone and their mother telling me the "correct" way to pronounce my last name.

My Grandmother was Marie Gary from T-Mamou. Her father was from France so not kin from that side.
The Landrys and Garys were kin to each other per this
LINK
I knew Isaac Gary and grew up with the Durios who said they came from the Gary side.
When did you graduate from Welsh?
Bet it’s hard to find boudin in Bawsten!!

here is a video w the pronunciation of a Shoe Brand
ETIENNE Aigner. First time I ever heard the name in the early 70s as a shoe buyer. However, names and the pronunciation are owned by the "owner" and they can pronounce it as they wish.

LINK

Ignore the Aigner part as it is German and not French. also not relevant here
