Roll Call - Those who have been bitten by a Mandoline

Another thread had me curious as to how many have been affected by the kitchen's most dangerous tool.
I'm a member of the club. Ten stitches after an emergency room visit. Seconds after the incident, I realized that it didn't simply cut me, but it shaved off the side of my finger which I put in a plastic bag and took to the hospital with me. They didn't use it, but simply stretched the skin and sewed it up after they were confident there was no ligament damage.
This was before I purchased gloves, and I was slicing a cucumber, so I couldn't use a guard. I'm never using one again without gloves.

Damn, that sounds awful. I've managed to avoid injury, but my better half was slicing potatoes for a Christmas party au gratin....he got through the slicing okay, but managed to slice open a finger while cleaning the mandoline.

Yeah. Mine was pretty bad. I just wrapped it up with some stuff out of a first aid kit and my boss looked at it the next morning and recommended I go get it checked out at the clinic.
Mainly because it was a really deep jagged cut and apparently those can get infected more easily.

Took the tip of my thumb off the FIRST time i used it. Took quite a while to heal and looked bad. Joked with my friends about it. One of those friends got one and did the exact same thing his first time using it. I felt less like an idiot.

I've never been bit by the mandoline but use a glove anyway.
Oyster knife though...I've put one of those bad boys about halfway into my palm.

years ago i buried the tip and side of my index finger into a mandoline blade, went right into my nail bed. my finger is still fricked up from that

I worked in a small kitchen, which accompanied a wine and small plate shop, in college and all of my sandwich prep was done a meat slicer. I’d keep it off and slice all of my tomatoes, onions....tips of fingers. I cut myself so bad one day I didn’t look at the wound for a week. Just put pressure on it and taped it up.
Our mandolin lives at the bottom of our appliance drawer. My wife’s cut herself with every blade that thing carries, and I’m still scared of the meat slicer.

Very similar to how a mandoline slicer works, but not exactly. I sliced the tip of my thumb off trying to clean a margarita maker. Par of it was jammed and I was trying to spin it and when it finally gave my thumb went clean across the blade.
Recently, I sliced the side of my middle finger off while chopping onions.
I am in the kitchen often, but I have horrible knife skills.

Egads. I recently bought a mandoline for the wife; I barely nicked the edge of a thumbnail 1st time (it needed trimmming anyway, I said to myself). I'm buying gloves today!

I cut the tip off my middle finger on my right hand slicing zucchinis with one. That was about 10 years ago. I haven't picked one up since.

I used to use the stupid guard that barely grabs the source and compromises control. I refused to ever go bare fingered. I one day researched for blade proof gloves, and I have been using them without any issues ever since

I too have been dumb enough to use this device without the safety guard. I didnt cut myself bad but afterwards felt like a big dummy
