Hey man, having a pinch of Skoal while I take a shite is one of the simple pleasures of my work day.

The part of this I find fascinating is how little coverage this received.

Roughly 2 million people between the ages of 18-21 are tobacco users and won't be able to purchase it in 270 days, yet no one said a peep about it.

By the way raising the tobacco buying age had broad bipartisan support.

That's because congress supports whoever pays them the most

I used to be a live and let live dude

But seeing my premiums soar because losers are ingesting carcinogens by the barrel and getting expensive cancer/diabetes/heart disease is making me question whether various substance regulation is some grave violation.

Yeah, this is sure to stop tobacco use. No one under 21 drinks too. Very effective.

That's a pretty ballsy statement. I'm sure we could apply that logic to something you do.

I smoke

The fact is the cost of health care for tobacco users is crazy. There is not one good thing coming out of tobacco use. Nothing.

Still no reason to remove the choice from an adult.

So instead of supporting the logical and obvious solution to the problem of soaring premiums, the solution that other first-world countries have taken, you prefer the "solution" that restricts freedom and will do nothing to reduce tobacco use anyway?

Yep, you're a modern conservative.

For those keeping track, an 18 year old can vote, sign contracts including loans, and join the military, but they're not trusted enough to decide whether or not to drink or smoke.

It's hard to believe anyone actually STARTS smoking these days. How f'n dumb do you have to be????

But if you are that dumb, it's not like you are going to say, hey, at 18 I would start, but at 21 I'll wait. LOL.

The tobacco industry provides a lot of jobs.

The same could be said about many vice and entertainment industries.

Be that as it may, what if the government then says no one should drink wine or beer or eat cheeseburgers? Government regulation is never the answer.

This is America...they should have the right to make bad decisions.

I agree. But as a caveat to that, I (the taxpayers) shouldn't have to pay for the consequneces of those poor decisions, i.e. healthcare costs for conditions related to tobacco use. You want to smoke? Fine by me. But pay for your own lung cancer treatment. You like Skoal? Who am I to tell you not to dip. But pay for your own jaw removal

Tobacco users should have to pay more in health insurance premiums (and not just that $25 nonsense that some companies enforce).

Eh, most things you could find some quality that could be somehow twisted as not being detrimental to health. Mostly a psychological stress reliever or something.

The only time I can think of tobacco being beneficial if for drug addicts. I know they used to (not sure if anymore) encourage the patients to pick up smoking to distract them. I guess in that case I am about it.
