re: Mid-City NOLA Area

You can assure no one of anything. I’ve been robbed at gun point twice in the last five years and my apartment broken into. I live north of Jeff Davis. The robbers were relatively polite except for that fact they pointed a gun at me. The first let me keep my favorite penny that I’ve kept in my wallet since ninth grade. The second listened while I recited the Sermon on the Mount.
I always chuckle when Uptowners and MidCityers get defensive about living in the suburbs. What makes these neighborhoods urban? It’s no less a suburb than Metairie.

It was 100% the suburbs in the mid 19th century. Referred to as back o'town. And is still referenced as such in darker demographic households.

The lots are smaller than out in Metairie or Arabi, Chalmette, etc.
Anything that is NOT the French Quarter started out as either plantations, farm-land, or swamp, and thus became suburbs.
Anything along the Carrollton corridor, save for Hollygrove and Gert Town should be OK. For the poster asking about Oak Street, you have to look at how far off of Carrollton Avenue you are looking.

Buddy of mine owns Mid City Pizza and Banks Street Bar. Don't think those would be bad places to start.

Most bars and eateries on Banks street are good establishments. Finn McCools, 12 Mile Limit, Mid City Yacht Club all good bars.
As someone mentioned earlier Broad St. is definitely well on its way to gentrification. Marjies, Ruby Slipper, Zony Mash, Gabrielle's is nearby.

I've been looking at some places to stay around New year's. I'm looking more towards Uptown close to Oak Street. How would that compare to Mid City?
Oak Street is farther away from the FQ or CBD, but it's a lovely part of NOLA, with close access to plenty of great bars and restaurants. Plus, it's fun to catch the street car on Carrollton/St. Charles and ride it through Uptown to Canal.

Only go here if you want to hang with the Elizabeth Warren crowd.

I guess it’s a start but broad street is gonna scare most visitors who already have preconceived notions. Lotta people of color loitering

Bywater was all heroin junkies until very recently. It will never be 100% clean and desirable but it will have enough good stuff and there will always be adventure enthusiasts who enjoy a touch of danger so everyone knows they are edgy and hip.

Very true.
I took some Metairie friends to Marjie's and they were NOT happy about being in that area. They were on high alert. You would have thought it was Hollygrove in the 90s.
God forbid if I took them to Zony Mash

They might not realize where they are. Those new projects are still in pretty good shape.

Is actually gentrifying. New construction and a lot of renovation. White people and even some Asians live there. Drive down Willow from Carrollton to the parish line. It blows my mind.

Carrollton and Conti area is really nice and low crime
Stay away from Tulane area. The closer to city park the better
