Why does it feel so wrong to be alone in public places?

It seems strange to me that it is uncouth and taboo to eat in a restaurant or go to a movie by yourself, but totally normal to have said food/movie delivered to you by a driver.

Is it not a little bit weird that we have a society that constantly berates us for not being social, lamenting the loss of face-to-face contact and conversation, yet also punishes us for going out in public alone? It seems like fewer and fewer places are becoming acceptable places to talk to strangers and meet new people, and fewer and fewer places are acceptable to go alone? It's like the only places it is acceptable to be alone are places where social interaction is 100% discouraged (library) or where intoxication is expected (bar).

Is it just me or does any of this seem a little weird to anyone else?

Learn to be comfortable in your own skin, and you will be fine.

It also helps if you have traveled for work a good bit - you get used to it.

Real answer is because you’re exposed. We evolved to travel in groups. You *probably* aren’t going to get killed just being by yourself in a large group of strange people, but the odds are better that you will be than if you have a group around you to protect you. And over the millennia, that instinct of feeling uncomfortable being alone in public spaces was naturally selected for.

Is going to a movie alone really taboo? I don’t think it is.

If you have to ask, it’s prolly you.

I travel a good bit. Heading out to a Sports Bar for some wings and a couple of beers is great. From time to time talk to some people at the bar and shot the sh-t.
I am in my 50s and enjoy it. Would I rather be home? Yes. Make the best of it.
People need to get a grip.

It’s just you. You reek of insecurity and self consciousness. Find some confidence and comfort with who you are and you can do anything alone or with someone else

WTF? Sometimes I like to be alone in public. Kind of feels like I am more free to interact with others than pay attention to the person with me.

I went to the movies by myself once.. It was during the day, not that full..

What I don't like is when I am eating alone and someone I know comes in and we talk and they just come sit with me then I have to engage when I just want to be in my own mind..

It’s not taboo, at all. It just makes you feel uncomfortable.

I’m perfectly comfortable doing things alone. I usually do. I don’t like humans.

I roll with my kitties and I’m hard as frick. And possibly drinking.

I think people think that others find it a lot weirder than they actually do. I've never actually seen anyone say its weird, but I often see posts complaining about others finding it weird.

The older you get the more glorious dinner alone can be. And day naps.

Got a rare weekday off, and I went to get lunch by myself then saw a movie. It was awesome.

I prefer to eat alone unless it’s with family. Hate small business talk. Been on both sides, hate wasting energy in small talk. I’m an old man though.

Blame phones and social media. 30 years ago you would have made conversation with strangers. Oh the horror.

Not for me.

When I want to be left the frick alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Brb. Going to make a song out of this.
