Why did the NCAA go to a playoff committee instead of keeping the BCS and take the top

4 teams? Im a believer in the BCS system.

It has the same top 3 with Clemson at 4.

Because a committee of experts is needed to fill out the card:
Pick (3) from the following:
Alabama
Ohio St
Clemson
OU
Write in (1) wild card to throw everyone off the scent. ___________________

Fear of computers not applying the "eye" test.

Part of the issue was that fans were tired of the computers being so "important." They wanted the "human element" involved, and more than just AP voters. They specifically wanted football minds on a committee so that teams are judged by a real "eye test" and not just some media guy filling out an AP ballot based on the scores page of the local paper, or a assistant GA filling out his coach's ballot for the coach's poll. That's why there are a lot of former coaches, players, and ADs on the committee.
It's all hogwash, but that's what they were saying.

Because all the media did not like the fact that once the formula was set at the beginning of the year, they could not change the narrative.
The College Football media loves to change the rules during the season. Hot team and player at the beginning of the season is the flash in the pan at the end of the season.
For example, the guy from Ohio State, Chase Young, has a great game against a relatively weak Wisconsin team. Now Ohio State is the most complete team; this is the new narrative. Truth is basically Ohio State has played the equivalent of 8 Texas A&M or worse teams. No one has had the athletes that could stress Ohio State yet this year. Burrow or Tua would throw for 300+ and multiple touchdowns on that defense. LSU or Bama could scheme double teams on Young and would dominate them. They do not have the CBs and LBs that both LSU and Bama have at this point.

Because the committee is better than the polls

I really think you’re underestimating how good Chase Young is, but your point is valid

more than just AP voters
it’s been well over a decade since that poll was involved in anything outside of itself.

Because of USC.

The last iterations of the BCS computations did factor in human polls, so I'm not sure why we need a human committee.

Maybe it's just me, but the playoff committee rankings doesn't have the same excitement as the BCS did.

It was 2/3 human element.
BCS used to me majority computers. Then people freaked the frick out when Nebraska made the title game without winning their conference, so they added more human element

They changed to get more control of who plays in the NCC.

You mean OU right? I mean, they played us...am I missing something?
It always had a human element. They increased the weight of it after USC was left out of the natty that year.

Because the committee is better than the polls
I'll take a serious committee over media polls any day.
It's funny how the March Madness selection committee is universally respected, and they're basically the same thing.

BCS used to me majority computers.
By the way, everyone thinks computers are some artifically intelligent entity that knows all.
THe computers are programmed by humans, and those humans decide what variables are important and which ones aren't.
Humans decide the weighting of those variables. And humans tweak the formula every year. Sometimes margin of victory is important, over years it's not .
The computers aren't the answer.
