Same for me. I've tried other brands, but CDM is what I grew up on. I especially don't care at all for pure coffee without chicory. That crap is like weak tea to me.

Chicory was added to coffee to cheaply stretch it. If you want stronger coffee, just add more coffee.

Anyway, to answer the question, I’ll move between different French Truck medium-ish roasts. I have Ethiopian Kossa in my cup at the moment. I think I also still have some Erato Espresso blend. But no matter what, it’s always ground immediately before making.

I've tried plain coffee sans chicory several times and when I made it I almost doubles the amount of coffee used to make my normal 12 cup pot.

Still weak as shite in my opinion and could damn near read the paper through it. I'll stick with my coffee and chicory.

Your problem is that you are using the shittiest method of making coffee, and it sounds like you even cheaped out on that. You wouldn’t be able to see your newspaper through the coffee I brewed this morning in a french press, much less read it.

Your water is moving way too quickly through the grounds and therefore isn’t picking anything up. That’s why you need something like chicory to trick you into thinking your coffee is “strong”.

If I am buying from the grocery, I go with Union or French Market Medium/Dark Roast coffee and chicory in the red can. My ideal is Congregation Coffee, High Walk, (Low Walk if I want decaf). I buy chicory and add it to the coffee. Brewed in a French Press, it's strong and perfect. Congregation coffee is made in Algiers. You can buy direct or in some locations in New Orleans.

$17 for a 2lbs bag of beans on Amazon. Grind every morning and brewed with an OXO Barista Brain drip machine.
