Hi-Point guns, any experiences or opinions?

Yes, I know they are cheap arse guns, but some people swear by them.

When they swear by them.....is it in ebonics?
Sorry, smartass in me couldn't help but say that. I have no experience with them other than what I've seen here and other places online. Never shot or handled one

They only work when the grip is wrapped in electrical tape

They're cheap and heavy, but if it's all you can afford for protecting you and your family......
Quote from the owner, Tom Deeb - "I didn't have a lot of money growing up to buy firearms, and I wanted working people to be able to afford a weapon without having to take out a mortgage on their house. Poor people need protection more than other people."
They use an older technology blowback design with a heavy zinc alloy slide in order to keep costs down.
Most Hi-Point problems that I've seen are a result of negligence from the owner - left under the seat of their vehicle, rarely cleaned, and covered with food and dirt.
Their warranty is second to none, and their customer service people are courteous and friendly.

I don't have any experience with their pistols, but I have one of their carbines and it's a nice little gun. It's fun and reliable.
Demo ranch did a video on the toughness of the pistol. Pretty good video.

Little first-hand experience with them;
Ugly as sin, and not in a stylish way. Bizzare, clunky design that is different than any other. Absolutely zero bragging rights or credit for owning one. Low priced, and considered "cheap" rather than "inexpensive" or "a bargain". They don't look good in either a nice leather or a Kydex holster. Jack Bauer and John Wick would rather use a screwdriver than a Hi Point to kill bad guys onscreen. They don't have cool names or multicolor finishes like Sigs.
Unconditional lifetime warranty, and it seems that every online review I've seen that actually involves shooting one, is that they function reliably and handle neglect quite well.
I wouldn't spend money on one, but occasionally I've thought about getting one just because, for the anti-cool factor.

Funny how media influences perception. People spend way more on different brands of guns, myself included, and most say "if my life truly depended on it, I wouldn't trust a Hi Point". That guy did everything he could to make that Hi Point not run, and couldn't do it.
I'd have had way more than just safety glasses on, especially at the end.

If you are looking into buying one.....
For the price. I'd spend a little more and go to a Smith & Wesson Shield.
Can be purchased with or without a safety.
Available in 9mm and 40sw
I own one. Stays in truck, never really gets cleaned. Never had had an issue with it. Paid $265 for it brand new on sale at academy.
Just my .02 cents.

If you decide to get a Hi-Point, Birdman makes a really nice set of sights, the HomeBoy Nyte-Sytes, for both Glock and Hi-Point.

quote:That's nearly twice the price of a Hi Point, and while you haven't had problems, I've heard of quite a few that have. I'm on the S&W forums too, and a lot of people bitch about things. Plus, there's that warranty- S&W claims lifetime too, up until they decide not to. Look at the 3rd Gen owners' comments about getting service.

And btw, all the ghetto-banger comments are a little off-base and out-dated. I go to a range that includes quite a few folks that have difficulty with the belt concept , and I'm not seeing Hi Points. I'm seeing a shite-ton of Krinkovs and other AK pistols... them fellas be slinging a lot of 7.62x39 downrange.

I have one that I got from a friend for $150. 9mm and I keep it in my truck. Never cleaned it. Shoot it every now and then and never had a problem. I shoot mainly reloads FMJs.

You paid more than you could have bought a new one.

Friend of mine (passed away recently) was a retired LSP Master Trooper/ Sgt. After retiring he worked quite a few years in the crime lab.
He told me that The Hi-Points, for all their faults (high bore axis, lousy trigger, limited round count before extensive barrel wear) are far more reliable than they used to be (and far more reliable than people usually give them credit for being).
He would never have carried one (nor would I), but he said that when they would test Hi Points that had been recovered in connection with a crime, none of them ever failed to fire in the lab.
His biggest reason for not wanting to carry or recommend one, was that if you fired it enough to get/stay really proficient (which most Hi-Point owners never do), you'd wear out the barrel (and maybe other components). So you'd never know how/if the gun would fire when you really needed it for SD.

Deeb knows the low price tag on his guns may attract criminals, too. "The dope dealers and gang bangers don't like to spend a lot of money on weapons," Deeb said. "They tend to throw them away." Because of that, Deeb designs his guns to make them easily identifiable through ballistics testing and a second, hidden serial number. He also provides trigger locks, and stopped making a chrome-plated handgun that appealed to the criminal element. "Money isn't everything in life. I feel I bear some responsibility, and that's why I do everything possible to catch the bad guys," he said.
When Deeb learned that a Hi-Point rifle was used in the shooting at Columbine in 1999, he closed his factory for a day and considered leaving the gun business. "I was just sick over it," he said. "I thought about quitting, but then I thought I'm not going to be defeated by evil."
Seems like the owner of the company, RIP, was an all around great guy.
