So are you more comforted by the thought that tragedy is random? That your life can be humming along just fine, then by random chance it is snuffed out and that's the end of the line for eternity? Does that thought bring you peace?

Yes.

To suggest that it's all part of some plan that the man in the sky pulling the strings has is simply a coping mechanism. And if that helps people deal with hardships and not be assholes I'm fine with it (though it could be argued, easily, that religion turns many people into assholes).

like he did in the Bahamas last week? had the Bahamas been our enemy and this had happened centuries before things like commonsense/internet/IQs being above 80...

you would have called it a miracle and attributed it to "god". now we call it hurricanes...and call it global warming....when in truth if god wanted our planet to cool off, he would just cool it down himself with a real miracle, right?

Ah, the "God doesn't do things the way I would so He doesn't exist" argument. How is that proof He doesn't exist again?

It isn't proof that god doesn't exist. Now, there are certain formulations (i.e. The Problem of Evil) that make it difficult for the literal interpretation of the Christian God to exist as written/claimed, but that has nothing to do with whether some higher power exists.

I've literally never spoken to an atheist who believed they could prove that god doesn't exist. I'm not sure why theists cling to that strawman.

he also allows people to die in hurricanes, young children to die of cancer, kids to be sold into sex slavery, and humans to kill each other based on their beliefs in him. oh wait, my bad, that's the red guy with the horns that lives in the flames below earth, got it!!!

Well, aside from the factual and scientific debunking of literally hundreds of claims that are in the bible, no. And the burden of proof is on the person making the claim, not the one suggesting that all available data points to it not existing.

Take, for example, Scientology. PROVE to me that there weren't aliens that came to earth and dropped people or some shite into volcanoes and whatever else they believe. And that there isn't an alien overlord that rules the universe. I can make up anything I want to explain the universe and given your approach of "prove to me it doesn't exist" my made up explanation would be no less viable than yours.

that god could EASILY make go away with a miracle...yet his idea of laughing at suffering is to use his 'miracles' to make canvas paintings of his mother cry.

seems like a complete Richard to me.

you realise he is saying...look at how powerful I am, yet I choose to let those people in the Bahamas all die and instead will make a piece of canvas in Chicago ooze liquids

No. It really doesn't. The bodies going back thousands of years cannot be counted. Anyway, the central driving force behind marxism isn't atheism. It just tries to implement by force, something humanity should have figured out long ago.

I never said I knew he doesn't exist. I don't have the chutzpah to think that as it is very egotistical.

God doesn't do things the way I would so He doesn't exist

Love this one. Also never said that. But ask yourself: do you want to worship a god that allows evil? A god that allows innocents to die for literally no reason?

Again, if he does exist, he isn't some benevolent being who only has love for the universe he created. He is either a neutral party doing frick all, or he is actively involved in perpetuating the world as we see it, not improving it.

Imagine putting a bunch of ants in an ant farm, then just walking away saying "hope they live", then watching as they starve and die. That's essentially (obv not 100%) what has happened after Jesus took that big elevator to the sky if we are to believe the bible.

Christian god, not generic god.

I'm fond of Russell's Teapot, as well.

You understand that you're aggressively shouting at an atheist, right?

I didn't think I was aggressively shouting

I used the Bible and the Christian god as that's where I was raised, but you could substitute just about any religious text and it would still apply.

The funny thing is, when we point to those things that have been debunked or disproven then we are not to take the text at it's word. But if it's something that that particular person aggressively believes in and they can find a passage in the Bible (or whatever) on it? Then it's time to start quoting scripture.

I don't think anyone was saying that, though it does make a great straw man.

The point we were making was two fold. First, we don't believe in the existence of gods. Second, if we did, it would be a terrible system under which to live. The second is not evidence for the first. For instance, I hate the idea of childhood cancer. But, I know it exists. I can't wish it away, or simply decide to not believe in childhood cancer because I don;t agree with it's existence. It simply is.

It isn't, which is why none of us offered as proof of anything.

This is why we can't have nice things here anymore. Turns out, when you suggest that people who simply do not believe in the supernatural are linked to Stalin and Mao, they tend to get a BIT testy and fight back.

Then, we get the "I'm being persecuted" card from the folks that played the Communist card against atheists...and bans take place.

Yup, same here. Some of my earliest memories are of me sitting in religion class or church looking around thinking "do all these adults really believe this?" If I would have know what bullshite was, that's wat I would have called it. Later in life I tried like hell to believe, because I needed something to believe in due to tragedies in my life, and I still couldn't do it.

Same. Gives creedance to the theory that belief in God is partially genetic.
