I rode my bike in rain during winter at that age. No shite.

Had to even walk it over to the bike rack and chain it up.

Then I drove home after school, my parents worked till 5-6, so I had to also cook my own food and everything else till then.

When I was in elementary school, there were a ton of kids who lived close enough to school to walk (maybe a 5 minute walk. 10 minutes, tops). A friend of mine has kids who go to the same school and kids aren't allowed to walk home anymore, unless they are escorted by a parent or guardian- which totally defeats the purpose. A parent might as well just drive over and get the kid at that point. Kids today are growing up with zero independence and our future will suffer because of it.

Why? Why does he need the schools blessing on how the kid gets to school?

I don't care.

The school's responsibility begins and ends when the kid steps on school property, be it the actual building or a bus.

Why do I need a school's permission on how he/she gets to school?

Shoot, riding your bike to school was one of the best parts about going to a neighborhood school. I was riding my bike to Jefferson Terrace starting in the freakin’ first grade for cripes sake and I’m still alive.

We had more kids ride their bikes to school than rode the bus, and most of them had to cross College Drive. Not that way any more. My kids rode their bikes to school quite often, but they went to a Catholic school several blocks away in our subdivision.

The school has every right to dictate how they release a 7 yr old from school property into the world. Jesus some of you are stupid.

Yeah I am not sure I would want to send my kid to a school where I have to negotiate on what terms my kid can be "released".

Its almost like some people think they cant function unless being told what to do.

Teacher probably handled it wrong but I wouldn’t let me kid ride to school in today’s world.

I was on way to work recently and noticed a group of 4 young kids about 7-10 yrs old walking to school. They were coming out of a neighborhood and had about a half-mile walk to the elementary school.
I thought it was pretty cool. Individually, they were too young to be walking alone, but 4 of them together walking from the same street in the mornings? I'd let my kid do it. Bring back some of the cool stuff about the 'old days'.

I rode my bike from K-3rd grade until I was forced to get on a bus at 6:30 am for a school across town.

Kids used to have fun with bikes. Upgrading or talking shite on/praising another kids bike was always a thing when I was younger.

I was in a rural part not long ago, sitting in the car. Saw a pack of kids go by on bikes, felt like that scene in jurassic park when they first see the sauropod

There is no other concern other than the welfare of the child.

Parent calling school "where is johnny, he never came home at 3:00?"
School "not sure mam, we last saw him on his tricycle riding down 3rd street."

I used to ride a bike to school for several years as well but it was 6th to 8th grade, not as a 7 yr old.

Thats a decision thats up to the parents. If they say its ok for him to leave the school shouldnt be getting in the way unless theres some sort of imminent threat.

Obviously a 1st grader shouldnt be biking miles to school, but a school shouldnt be calling CPS because they arbitrarily deem a students transportation to school inadequate.

You are underestimating the shiftiness and laziness of parents today. You are looking at it through the lens of actions that would be taken by a normal, nurturing, caring parent.

These parents that the school districts must deal with would have their kids hitchhiking to home and school at 6 if it meant they could sleep in

No, they shouldn't be calling CPS. But are you doubting that if Lil Johnny got abducted riding his bike home from school that the parents wouldn't file suit against the school, even if the parents were the ones that pushed for the bike ride?

They also don't want Lil Johnny to park his bike on campus then accidentally hang himself on a swing set rope when nobody even knows he's there.

The school has to have a chain of custody for the children in order to be accountable.

I got after school detention once in the 3rd grade and my dad made me walk home like 4 miles, right down the main road in Selma, AL- which is all one big dangerous shithole
