Watching Stranger Things , using Gods name in Vain and cursing, I was thinking I wouldn’t want my kids to watch this, though otherwise it’s a good show.

Agreed. At a certain point, it’s just lazy writing. I don’t know anyone who talks like that all the time.

It loses its effect when done too much. Trying too hard to be edgy.

I can laugh at and enjoy profanity used in proper situations but sometimes writers just put in profanity to make young kids seem cool and it fails. It makes them unlikable try hards.

Rim of the World, Stranger Things, and Society are the most guilty of this in recent memory. I liked all three but the profanity and crudeness didn’t make any of them better.

I agree it's distracting sometimes when lazy writers are overly dependent on profanity, but I didn't really notice it that much in Stranger Things.

Our President curses in public on an almost daily basis. The top Democrats and Republicans are tremendously fond of cussing whenever they get a chance.

Media reflects our society, even for "nostalgia" shows. If politicians, the people who should most watch their language, are cussing in public then movies and TV shows most certainly are going to do so.

By the standards of the day Stranger Things isn't bad at all in that regard

Cursing is such a normal part of speech I don’t even recognize is it movies and tv shows anymore. It’s just how people speak.

Well “trying too hard to be edgy” perfectly describes most 13 year old boys

I don't notice it and it never bothers me in movies, but I notice it more and cursing seems weird from real life people.

I don't allow my son to curse in front of us, but I have no problem letting him watch movies with cursing.

Only movie I have ever turned off because of language was Fist Fight. The language was ridiculous in that movie.

I let him watch it on his own. Just felt weird and filthy watching it with him.

Hes 16.

I say this all the time and is my only negative complaint with Billions and Succession.

Both are really good but both have over the top cussing in odd situations.

Billions is the worst. They will have a meeting and just drop 20 F bombs that don’t fit with normal conversation.

They literally had a line from last season where a character said “f*ck that fu*king f*ck”. I mean, come on.

When used in excess, it’s usually lazy writers using it to add drama or humor to a boring line or scene. Sometimes it’s the actor using it as a crutch during an ad-lib.

On the DVD commentary for the movie Made Men, Favreau and Vaughn discussed a scene where they did nothing but repeatedly drop F bombs. They said they usually had Peter Billingsly on set for that film to keep them from relying on cussing to get through a scene, but he was out that day and no one reined them in.

It really has gotten ridiculous over the past decade.

I’m not even uptight or anything, but I do feel like it has influenced my own daily dialogue.

I use to never curse and now I do it every day.

I think it’s just wildly popularly and accepted in today’s time. Especially with forms of texting and phrases like “AF.”

As far as the GD thing goes, I have never said that. That has been in movies for a very very long time.. that is nothing new.
