This is my issue. If pitchers were generally bad hitters but actually made the effort I think I'd be okay with it, but seeing nearly every pitcher with a sub .100 BA as they lazily swing at every pitch is a waste of an AB.

between this and forcing us to see more bullpen usage, I'm definitely onboard the DH train for the NL now, and I was staunchly opposed up to this season.

2019 AL batting average: .254
2019 NL batting average: .253

DH makes a huge difference. We need it bad.

ETA:

League | BA | OBP | SLG | OPS
AL | .254 | .323 | .440 | .763
NL | .253 | .323 | .433 | .756

Giant difference. If we don’t adopt the DH in the NL, the game will die.

Pitchers this year are hitting .131/.166/.165. Twenty years ago they hit, .147/.187/.189. So it is worse now, but it’s not that drastic.

Doesn't convince me that it isn't a waste of an AB.

I like the pitchers batting. 9 in the field should be the 9 batting IMO.

But I think the DH spot is inevitable.

Adam Everett was basically done as a MLB player at age 32 even though he was still one of the four or five best defensive shortstops in baseball at the time because he couldn't hit. If a pitcher put up the offensive numbers Adam Everett put up in his last season as a regular (.238/.288/.325), he would be considered a really good hitter.

Oh, I agree. I’m just saying it’s always been a waste.

No, I like the added strategy of having pitchers hit.

No. NL plays real baseball and should keep it that way. No Substitute Batters! We used to do that shite when my dad made us let my little sister play with us but professionals are not 10 year old kids.

Goddamnit, no. AL baseball is less exciting. Plus, having a pitcher who can control the bat is a huge advantage for a club.

If a guy has the athletic ability/baseball skills to become a major league pitcher, then shouldn’t they also be a decent enough hitter to at least knock it around in HS?

dodger's pitchers are hitting .170. That's better than some middle infielders on other teams....and so can we substitute hit for infielders that are amazing on defense but can't hit?

I was also anti-DH because of the Astros and still am now. I agree that the DH makes the game more entertaining in a way.

I just feel like the pitcher hitting is a part of the game. If a pitcher throws heat on the inside of the plate, then he should also have to face heat. If a pitcher has a good game going but comes up to bat in the later innings with runners on in a close game, the manager has a tough decision to make (which is how baseball should be played).

Why are you comparing the 2019 AL to 2018 NL? You should compare across the same year. If hitting is down this year compared to last, that comparison is ridiculous. It seems like you’re deliberately picking and choosing stats there.
