So anyone think the shooter actually had an automatic weapon, or will it be one of those cases where the weapon was perfectly legal to own?

ETA: and just to add my own opinion to this little debate. I have a CC and have spent quite a bit of time on the range. In that situation I would prefer to have a weapon to protect myself/family, but would have only used it if escape was not an option. No one is saying a civilian there would go John Wick on his arse and hunt him down. It's more of a deterrent and no other option type of deal. I know I would have felt very outgunned by an AR styled rifle, and avoided a firefight at all cost.

It'll be interesting if it's a CA compliant AR

Once you took out the active shooter, why in the world would you still be waving your gun around?

He didn't suggest that and I assume he didn't mean that since it would be silly. I am pretty sure he was talking about a situation where the cop saw him first as he was firing and either the cop could not see the actual perpetrator due to his angle of approach or because the perpetrator had gotten concealment as a result of the fire. This is obviously a very real possibility as undercover cops have been killed by friendly fire when their badge was not visible and the color of the day was missed.

In the end, we can only speculate in a risk-reward determination and it will only be born out over time.

I don't want to get too far ahead of the formal research, but my hunch is that it thrives largely in suburban basements, particularly in areas where a fedora offers year-end round shade.

but do people honestly think that a regular citizen will be able to keep their cool and locate the shooter while there's a massive slaughter going on?

Why assume that the shooters are highly trained and experienced warriors? Why can’t they be “regular citizens” who have never been in a firefight and will panic at the first sign of return fire?

Crowded places with guns: gun shows, police stations, shooting ranges, hunting clubs. Name me one mass shooting that has occurred at any of those. I'll wait.

Oh yeah, you're retarded.

You're slow.

Those places pale in comparison to a school, mall, theater, festival. Don't be stupid.

Why is it then that over 90% of these incidents take place where guns are banned?

Because most of the places where tons of people congregate are weapon free zones. Correlation =/= causation.

And if they were crazy enough to want to maximize casualty, wouldnt potential of armed opposition be one of the first considerations? Duh.

Go down the list of places where there are easy targets, regardless of weapons policies. Now consider weapons policies. The list would be unchanged.

My point is it's quite a stretch to think allowing weapons at any of these places would do nothing to prevent the initial attack. However, I do agree that it could stop the attack from being worse.

Gun shows don't. In fact many of them have crowds that far exceed a school, theater, some festivals, etc.

I have many guns myself and am a gun supporter, but allowing people to have guns at places like this would only cause more issues. Most people who cc have no clue how to respond to a situation like this and would likely cause more harm than good -- especially with hundreds (if not thousands) of people close by.

Gun shows are the only thing that's even remotely comparable. I don't recall a shooting at a gun show, but I don't recall a mass shooting at any expo either. No boat shows, home improvement shows, etc.

I'm just not convinced a lack of guns is a contributing factor in these events.

There are also dozens of different types of hobby shows that have the same sort of layout, housed in the same sort of buildings and have similar crowds that have never (AFAIK) been the target of a mass shooting.

While I agree they aren't likely at the top of a potential mass shooters list of targets mass shooters seem to like outdoor venues unless they are ones with specific targets.

The contributing factor is the shooter knowing there is a guaranteed lack of guns. And with the average police response taking several minutes (or longer) unless there are already police on the ground, as a shooter who wants maximum body count and impact you are of course going to specifically target gun free zones.

It's not so much that a "good guy with a gun" could stop the shooter, it's the fact the shooter knows there won't be a "good guy with a gun". At their hearts these types of people are cowards.

Other than the fact these mass shootings only take place in places and events where the shooter knows there will be a shite load of people and he’ll be the only one with a gun?

ETA: Go ahead and downvote it all you want but you know I’m right. And all downvoting does is prove that yo can’t dispute what I’ve said.

I think the contributing factor is the shooter knowing that a lot of potential victims would be bundled together in one place.

Except there was a police presence there at the time. Police carry guns. That didn't stop the shooter.

You're going to target a place with a ton of people in close proximity. Most of those places tend to be gun free. It's that simple.
