I'd live in an overpass underneath Auburn Ave. before moving to the suburbs. Traffic is that hellacious, and, unless you're raising a family your weekends will be pretty bland.

I still see the value in some suburbs (Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton), but a lot of the suburbs of my youth (most Cobb, Gwinnett, etc.) hold very little appeal for me at this points, even with a family.

NRC and Georgia Power. Good luck though, you are directly competing with Georgia Tech grads that want to remain in the area.

Yes and no. GT has a pretty large national drain on talent. There's still a good amount of folks who get decent jobs from schools WAY far down the academic power rankings (i.e. Kennessaw State).

Depending on experience level there are so many positions that fit those job titles you should not have any trouble finding something. Warning: a lot of job postings will say Atlanta but will actually be in somewhere like Alpharetta. If you are fine with that you should definitely not have any issue finding a job.

I've heard of a few people move into the Battery complex where ST park is. It's fun, but it's an isolated eco-system. If your job is OTP up 75, it's not a bad option.

Yeah, the Battery makes some spots in Smyrna/Cumberland more livable. But that area generally has plenty of crime/thuggery so it's certainly no safety/tranquility escape from ITP.

West Midtown/Upper West has a lot going on too.

I do like Sandy Springs.

Gwinnett has over a million people living out there now alone. If your job is out there, it's a heck of a bargain. Otherwise, It's going to be 2 hours in your vehicle every day.

If you have experience in this I would check out Home Depot Corporate.

Home Depot is pretty much always hiring for these types of jobs. I have heard mixed reviews on working there though.

Electrical Engineering might be tough considering Georgia Tech is the home school in town and probably the best engineering school in the nation.

Was unemployment at 3% and a labor shortage in 2006?

It was 4ish percent at that time.

Is that 1% supposed to make some sort of material difference when candidate A lives 10 minutes away and similarly-qualified candidate B lives over an hour away?

Living close to where you work will always improve your life in some manner and should always be considered.

I think the issue is whether that advantage is wiped out by having to live in a declining or bad area (like large swaths of Gwinnett IMO).

I suspect we can all think of at least a couple of major Atlanta companies with HQs in undesirable areas and living next to work just isn't a very desirable proposition.

When I wanted to move to Atlanta I contacted a recruiter in the area. She found me a job and they paid for me to move.

Degrees: BS Physics (LA Tech). MS Electrical Engineering with a Materials Emphasis. (Southern)

Job: Electrical Engineer at a Defense Contractor.

Experience: All jobs including current one are 4 years experience. I fall in the early career professional list.

Location Desired: Old Fourth Ward.

Sounds like you should be fine. “Data Analyst” is a decently broad role, but you have a quantitative BS and MS and I’m assuming some solid coding experience, so you should fit decently into most of those roles whether it’s analytics/visualization to the backend of designing data warehouses.

Just make sure you target your experiences for each job you apply to. There’s lots of opportunity in striking distance of where you want to live. You could comfortably commute north of the loop to places like Sandy Springs or Dunwoody. And don’t forget about smaller companies, you can get a ton of exposure and experience in a smaller company. Good luck!

I live in the northern part of Gwinnett. If you’re this far out, you basically have to be OK with restricting yourself to working not much further away than Alpharetta unless you like being in your car an hour each way.

But it’s not hard. I’ve lived here for 13 years and have had 3 different employers with 5 different office locations. John’s Creek, Norcross, Alpharetta by northpoint, then off of Windward, then off of Old Milton. Worst commute was 50 minutes. Best was about 20.

My comment comes from someone with a LSU degree who used to live in Atlanta. Diversity hiring is big there. Maybe that’s not true in engineering, but it was in finance/general business in the mid 90s. Anyway, good luck! I really enjoyed my time there.

Interesting reading in this thread so far.. I’m wondering, since we have posters in this thread from all over, if someone were hypothetically looking to make a move from Louisiana to either Atlanta or Dallas, what would be the pros and cons of each, job-wise, and which city would you choose?

FWIW i’m 40ish, Caucasian and work in healthcare sales, with quite a bit of experience.. Not going to get into marital status, kids, etc since i’m not interested in which suburbs have good schools or where to live in each city- i’ m mainly interested in which city would have more plentiful/good paying jobs at the moment.. i know both would be an improvement from La., and fwiw i’m not interested in Houston.

Milton is an outlier there

But with the resurgence in Roswell and Alpahretta, they are hard to pass up. The downtown Alpharetta area is booming. like 20 new local nice restaurants all withing like a 1/4 mile. Plus open container for a huge area.

Most of the posters here don't like black people based on them being black. Surely this isn't news for you
