The United States Army Corps of Engineers said Monday that Iberville Parish does not need a permit to operate aqua dams in the event of a flood because they would be placed on a parish road and not in the wetlands or a waterway.

That announcement comes at a time where East Baton Rouge Parish is at odds with Iberville Parish over the aqua dams that would block water from Bayou Manchac from spilling into the Spanish Lake Basin. The concern is Iberville could possibly flood residents in East Baton Rouge Parish if the dams are deployed.

quote:

"I don't want any harm on Baton Rouge residents, but in the same breath, I have to protect my people," Ourso said. "Hopefully everything fairs out well."

The test of the aqua dams today comes at a time where East Baton Rouge Parish is formulating a plan to take action against Iberville. Two weeks ago, the parish attorney's office held a meeting with the Director of Transportation and Drainage. Attempts to find out what was discussed and what East Baton Rouge is going to do to block Iberville were not immediately clear. Lea Ann Batson told WBRZ two weeks ago she would not discuss their strategies.

quote:

This year, East Baton Rouge Parish asked what permits Iberville received for the aqua dams. Ourso said he didn't need one since he took an oath to protect and serve the people.

Today, the United States Army Corps of Engineers agreed that Iberville does not need a permit for the aqua dams. A spokesperson said usually the federal agency doesn't get involved in parish to parish disputes

EBR should invest in a series of 20-inch pumps to shoot the water over the dams.

Uclub may flood. I bet they don’t have flood insurance. If only they had a parish president doing something proactive instead of reactive.

Why wouldn't the put the dams on the other side of the Spanish Lake Basin?

It's a flood basin. It needs to be filled with flood water when the rivers/bayous rise.

Can someone explain to me where exactly this aqua dam will be placed?

Would this run the length of Bayou Paul/Manchac Rd from LA 30 to I-10?

Iberville will go bankrupt from all the litigation coming its way if they put in a temporary man made structure that floods thousands of homes in a neighboring Parish.

Eta
What are they even protecting? That area looks rural and designed to handle water.

Not sure why EBRP is crying. If there is not a law or no permit is needed for Iberville to use aquadams then there is nothing EBRP can do other than sue, which will end up being a waste of time and money.

What's going to be real fun is when the insurance companies sue him.

What about those Iberville people living in uclub south? I think this would negatively affect them. Is uclub south the nicest thing in all of Iberville?

Again I do not know much.

Could an argument be made that the water has a chance to go down a natural Bayou which is Manchac. He is not blocking Bayou Manchac which is where the water has to go to move toward the Amite River.

He is only keeping the water in Bayou Manchac from overflowing into his parish.

The water has a way out which is Bayou Manchac.

FYI off topic. Do miss Old Scaliat fishing days in the late 70’s and 80’s. Come home for Xmas to visit and we would make a short run to Spanish lake catching small bass and scaliat on the coldest, nastiest, and windiest day.
