Trying to start my parents' generator yesterday...

Riddle me this:
If they haven't started it since Hurricane Gustav and they left the gas in it since then, is it done for?
Tried starter fluid in the choke and that gets it to turn over but then it dies after a second.
ETA: They recommended try adding "Sta-bil" to help "remove the moisture from the old gas, but it looks like Sta-bil is a preventative additive, not to correct old gas. Thoughts?

It's not done for but you might've waited a little too long to start figuring those things out.

you need to flush out all fluids and start over. might have some gasket issues as well

The carb is probably gummed up severely. Probably too late to get it running today.

Run some Sea-Foam through it.

It’s not “done for”.
Need to clean the carburetor and check the fuel line and filter if it has one. Buy 100% gasoline. No ethanol. Add stabilizer. Never any trouble.
Newer models of carbs are not as good as the old.

Drain the gas tank, put fresh gas, clean the carborator, get some starter spray

since you can get it to turnover this might work
drain all old gas and put a gallon or 2 of non ethanol mixed with a can of seafoam
spray the shite out of the carb with carb cleaner
use some starting fluid or carb cleaner and spray into carb while cranking it and see if you can get it running once you get seafom new gas mixture running through the carb it will make a shite ton of white smoke and hopefully work after that
if not.... replace the carb

Take this to the outdoor board where the true baws can help.

After reading this I feel I also need to tell you another tip... dont place the generator indoors while running.

Drain the gas out. Pull the carb off. Pull the bowl off. If it looks like this, they're SOL. Fuel shut-off and hoses are probably fricked too
That's was my mom's. Carb got tossed, and a new one was ordered. It was only like $20 for a new carb, spark plug, and air filter

I'd just tell ole dad just to go spend some of your inheritance money with your blessing and go buy a new one.

the carb will be trashed
best thing to do is buy new carb for it on ebay
they are only like $10
as for now, you are screwed, that thing is going to be plugged solid and full of scale and varnish so it needs 24-48 hours soaking in berrymans chem dip just to have a chance to clean it and hope it works again and even that is only a 60% chance of success
as mentioned by others, its too late now so consider it unfixable for use during this storm

Empty out all of the old gas. On the bottom of the carburetor you will see a bottom bowl, unbolt it and pour out the old gas in it. Bolt everything back and spray some staring fluid in the throttle body. It’ll will start right up. When it does stop running from being out of starting fluid, fill the tank with gas and you’ll be good.

Carb is no good. Float bowl more than likely rusted thru. Just trash it. Fuel tank is also probably full of varnish and can be cleaned out. If you cant wait for a mail order carb they are sold at many places like Grainger but you will pay 3x as much for one.
