What killed Cream of Wheat?

This was a staple at my house growing up in the 1970s. A hot bowl of cream of wheat with a pat of butter on it and a sprinkle of salt was FIYA with some bacon.
I haven't even thought it about it in years until my 83yo mom came to live with us and asked for it. I went to the grocery store and could only find a little 'instant pack'.

Gross. My dad did that.
The correct way to eat cream of wheat is with a tablespoon of brown sugar or honey mixed in

I wonder if the gluten free diet movement played a part

I’ve always preferred Cream of Wheat more than grits and oatmeal as a kid growing up and we ate all three, but I haven’t eaten it in years. Made that comment to my wife just a few weeks ago. Now you’re going to make me go try to find some.

I'm getting close to 50 and have never had Cream of Wheat.

Back in the 70s my mom cooked that stuff in a double boiler pot. She set the bottom pot to boiling and then mixed the CoW in on the top pot. I guess later came pour a pack and stir in hot water. That is too damn complicated today. Not when one can plop in a better tasting Eggo and eat waffle within a minute. Even those may be passe' now. So progress and modern life destroyed CoW.

I thought this was on of those bad joke threads.

Malt-O-Meal > Cream of Wheat
Posted on 7/1/19 at 11:23 am to CAD703X
Hehehe, I have Cream of Wheat in the box, Malt-O-meal in the box, and Quaker Oats in the round cardboard can all 3. I keep the boxes inside a large ziploc each to help keep them fresh and any critters out. I use the oatmeal in cookies too.
Like to alternate in Winter, use butter, sugar and dash of milk (whole) in them.

It was horrifyingly unappetizing in smell, texture and taste.
So, there's all of that.

When I make oatmeal, I'll put in a quarter cup of cream of wheat with it. Excellent

Did you go to a CVS? Normal grocery stores still have it.

I always went sweet with it. Used to eat it growing up with my pawpaw. Sugar and milk til it's perfect.

Women lost the art of boiling water on a stove-top.
