JR’s contract is the last grandfathered contract under the current CBA that can be traded on its book value rather than its guaranteed value.
To explain, it is an old contract, JR is only guaranteed a low amount, but it is considered to have a trade value of the unguaranteed amount of the contract.
So Cleveland can eat, say, $15m in contracts from someone who then cuts JR and only pays about $2.5m to him.
All amounts are made up but the concept stands.

That was my first thought as well.

Why? We will just eat 3.4 million in cap space for nothing
Cleveland will not send any kind of asset with him

correct
CLE would receive an asset (along with salary) from a tax team in exchange for JRs contract
for example, we could have sent solo with a pick for JR, cut JR and saved the balance if we were a tax team

We can also absorb a bad salary for assets if we are so inclined.

Yes the pels are in the same position as CLE but that doesn’t have anything to do with JR Smith. Teams that would trade for his contract are like OKC or POR who are bumping the tax

The same teams that would give us assets for taking on a contract? Those teams would rather not trade for Smith as he is essentially $3.8M in dead space. They would prefer we take a contract into space.

What player we talking about? KP IS restricted, as Dallas traded for his rookie deal from New York.
Could have sworn he said he was signing the qualifying offer.

If he was signing the QO, he couldn’t get a new contract this season. Which is what Dallas is offering him.
He threatened to sign the QO with New York in an attempt to force his way out, which worked.

yes sorry man I completely misunderstood you.
my bad
so many teams with space is probably why he hasn’t been traded yet.
they have until 6/29 or they will cut him for nothing and pay his 3.4

I don’t think trades can be consummated until July 6 anyway, so I don’t know if they can trade him and have the other team only eat the guaranteed money.

Right. JR will be an interesting gauge of the price of cap space coming up. If they end up just cutting him and don’t trade, then there probably isn’t a lucrative salary dump market.

Once free agency starts on Sunday, the Houston Rockets are planning to recruit Jimmy Butler to push the Philadelphia 76ers for a sign-and-trade deal that would allow the All-Star forward to join James Harden and Chris Paul, league sources tell ESPN.

That can't possibly end horribly.....
Posted on 6/25/19 at 5:27 pm to Jwho77
And if the 76ers say “Nah”?
The rockets have no cap space whatsoever, not much in the way of assets, and no leverage.

Eric Gordon and PJ Tucker plus whatever future picks maybe. Unless they can find a third team to take Capela and send those assets to Philly
Posted on 6/25/19 at 5:30 pm to BallHawk
The 6ers should just laugh.
Posted on 6/25/19 at 5:30 pm to BallHawk
Low key, Eric Gordon would be good for them. They could use the spacing.
Posted on 6/25/19 at 5:32 pm to Mad Scientist26
They are probably going to lose Redick and need the shooting so Gordon fills a need. Tucker would be their starting three. If Butler is hell bent on going to Houston it’s not a horrible haul and then aren’t locked into long term money as Gordon and Tucker both are expirings I think

You still pass. You make Butler find a deal into someone with space or you try and resign him.
That being said I’d love Butler in Houston. What a disaster that would be.
