let me also add that for a brief window of his career, Nadal was more dominant than Fed across all surfaces

Rafa is an incredible tennis player who will go down as one of the best male tennis players of all time, no question. However, in my personal opinion, Roger Federer holds the edge for career achievement and overall prowess.
Let's compare their resumes (I'm not going to include their doubles resumes because they're basically the same):
Roger Federer
-Professional Record: 1207-264 (82.1%)
-Career Prize Money: $124,293,122 (second all time)
-Career Titles: 101 (second in the Open Era)
-Grand Slam Singles: 6 Australian Opens, 1 Roland-Garros, 8 Wimbledons, 5 US Opens (for a total of 20 Singles Grand Slam Titles)

He makes the French Open horrible to watch. Everyone knows he is going to win it going away unless Djokovic can do his thing. Otherwise, it is a beatdown every time.

It is an incredible accomplishment by an incredible athlete and tennis professional. I am a Rafa fan, but more of a Fed fan. I think Fed's game is more elegant and pleasing to watch, but my youngest son who is 14 would tell you that Rafa's is more pleasing to watch, largely because it resembles his style of play.
If you compare any one accomplishment between the two players, I think Rafa's 12 RG titles trump Fed's 8 Wimbledon titles, but I don't think there is a gulf there (I'm alluding to a whole other discussion beyond the scope of this thread). If you want to expand that statement to say overall dominance on clay then there is a greater gap for certain compared to RF's dominance on any surface.
Overall career resume, I like Fed's, but the Rafa HTH dominance makes one give pause in that regard. Also 20 is not a huge advantage over 18, and Rafa has multiples on all surface, but excluding clay, Roger has higher order multiple wins in all the other slams - at least 5 at each of the other slams, which is truly extraordinary.
But comparing is probably completely what this thread is NOT about. So yes, his accomplishment in this regard is remarkable and the guy is truly a treasure to tennis and sport in general, and deserves recognition as such.

I used to run a tennis facility. I got really into Tennis and my God...he is just utterly insane. I'd put him as the best ever and feel very comfortable doing so at this point.

41% of their matches were played on clay. Think about that. Only 8% of their matches were played on Feds best surface of grass
Lets break it down and try to make it equitable
Clay nadal leads 14-2 87.5% win pct for nadal
Hard fed leads 11-9 55% win pct for fed
Grass fed leads 2-1 66.7% win pct for fed
They played 39 times. Lets assume they had an even distribution of matches played on all surfaces and kept the same winning pct. It would look like this
Clay- Nadal leads 11-2
Hard-Fed leads 7-6
Grass-Fed leads 9-4
Overall it would be 21-18 for Nadal
Fed and Nadal are also separated by 5 years. Thats a pretty sizable gap for tennis that nobody seems to care about when it comes to this
Ultimate opinion. Fed is the greatest overall player and greatest grass court player
Nadal is the greatest clay court player and third best overall player
Djok is the second greatest overall player

You just mentioned three teams with a realistic shot at beating Bama. That's three more than the number of people capable of beating Nadal at the French Open.

Yeah, his run is pretty amazing and also the other majors. The guys he's competed against for his career are also all-time greats.
I wonder how many years he has left? Seems like he'll win several more majors.

At this point, I feel that both Djok and Nadal end up with 20 plus. The next generation of Tennis is awful and these two can continue to win majors for four or more years.
Fed's best chance is this year's Wimbledon to get to 21.

Edwin Moses didnt lose a 400m hurdle race for a 10yr span. Not a prelim not a semi not a final...for just over 10 yrs. He was a specialist at that event. He won gold in 4x400 relays because he obviously was a very good 400m runner but i don't think he ever participated in the olympics as an open 400m runner

I still put Borg above them. Winning as many French and Wimbledon s at the same time as much as he did is still almost unheard of.
