What’s wrong with it? The people I know that work there seem to be content

With his experience in power and steam aka turbines, I didn’t suggest saw mills

We had techs onsite repairing the capping valves on the digesters when the news broke, they were asked to leave.

OP,
Sorry to hear. At least the economy is booming and there are jobs to be had.
How are you doing? Still fighting the good fight?

But at 57, I feel too old to start shopping around for a new job, so I'll ride the Titanic down to the bottom.
A neighbor worked at one of the lignite fired power plants in East Texas and he was retired out at 58. He ready to quit and has continued working in the mining industry in Colorado and now in a copper mine in Arizona. He's been doing this for four years and actually commutes for two weeks on/two off. Dude amazes me that he does this after working 25 plus years at the plant here. So it can be done if one wants to continue working.

I watched grown men cry when the shipyard that i worked layed off due to lack of new contracts. That was over 40 years ago and I still have that memory stained in my head. Things will be okay but I totally feel your pain. God Bless. Things will turn out for the good.

Damn man thats terrible. Hopefully someone scoops you up quickly!
In the last year, we had clients in 2 similar situations. Be smart about your retirement assets. We advised one group to keep them as currently offer. The other were definitely a no brainer to rollover the pension and 401k.
Please seek fiduciary advice

This mill was the life blood of SE AR. Nothing else around here that needs a high pressure boiler/turbine operator. I can either move from my home town or work for peanuts. It’s scary because I haven’t had to look for/apply for/interview for a job in 25 years.
It’s scary to think what’s going to happen to Ashley county with this. With your power plant experience, you can easily find another Operator position either in the power plant, chem, or refinery side of things. Bad thing is, you will probably have to relocate.
Most of my family lives in Hamburg, Fountain Hill, and Crossett. Quite a few of them do/did work at GP. You’ll land on your feet with your experience.

I'm sorry man....I have family in that industry- with GP. It's scary indeed.....
Best of Luck in finding a new gig you can be happy with, as soon as possible.
