How was your experience with Dr. Singer?
I went to him for an assessment. He's a brilliant guy.

I'm like you, (near-sighted), I've no astigmatism, and I have wonderful close & medium vision. I have 20/35-ish far vision so I could drive without corrective lenses but shouldn't and don't.

He first wanted to see if I could live with having one eye done to 20/20 and leave the other alone. The eye that was done to would lose it's present good close-up vision, according to him.

So that would leave me with one eye doing the close-up work & the other doing the distance work.

I always ask "what would you do if you were me?" in these type situations. His answer to me was that he would consider leaving both eyes alone and still going with corrective lenses/contacts as I use my eyes so much in the close & medium ranges.

I appreciated his candor, that was last Fall, and I'm still glad I did nothing.

Eye Surgery center on Old Hammond
---That's where I went 10 years ago for Lasik. Glad it's still there.

My eyesight (distance) is still amazingly good.

For those of you that had the surgery, how bad did it affect your up close vision if near sighted?

----Before Lasik I could see close-up very well but was blind as a bat beyond 5 feet. After Lasik I needed (and still need) cheater reading glasses.

Extremely worth the trade off.

Yep that does sound like me, we even discussed the one eye thing but I’m not sure I could get used to it. I cannot get definitive answers on what it does to near vision which is also holding me back.

I also drive often without lenses but really shouldn’t.

I’m still on the fence on whether I should get it done. It sounds great but not worth it to me to have even a small complication because I can get by 75% of the time with no lenses at all. However I used to have perfect vision til my 20’s and would love to get back there.

I need to check into this. I wear glasses for reading only. I would love to be able to toss these readers in the trash.

I know they can correct one eye for up close a leave your other one alone. I don’t believe the surgery is as advanced for close vision as it is for far.

Appt went well, they did a couple eye test, lasted about an hour, I am a candidate!...super stoked!

My pre-op tests are next Wednesday and then my surgery is Friday June 14th!

It’ll be $1600 per eye, $3200 total for all-laser (Bladeless) LASIK. There is something called care credit, basically a 18mo no-interest credit card that I’ll probably do, I’ll have to read more about that later. There is a cheaper option, $799 per eye but that’s standard PRK lasik with blade...not as good.

I’m very very very excited. I was actually prepared for the lens replacement $7000/eye surgery due to my farsighted astigmatism, but they told me no, LASIK is all I need.

That’s fantastic. I’m going to keep that in mind. I’m leaning that way. But I have to get a muscle realignment surgery (which is scheduled for July) then my next step is going to be surgery.

I think it’s going to be the weirdest thing once I get to a point where I don’t have to wear glasses. Something you’ve done all your life is all of the sudden gone.

I have astigmatism...have worn glasses since kindergarten I’ve got an appt this afternoon Eye Surgery center on Old Hammond I’m probably going to have lens replacement surgery or LASIK, whatever they recommend. I’m ready to be done with glasses permanently My recent prescription says Sphere cylinder axis OD +4.75. -1.25. 175 OS +4.25. -1.00. 005 Whatever that means I guess I hope lasik is an option since it’s much less expensive than lens replacement, but I’m prepared to do it either way

I don't know what your surgeon told you, but I would strongly- and I mean very strongly- advise you to NOT have LASIK. Forget the price- if you are going to do anything, lens replacement is by far the best optiions based on your prescription.

My buddy saw Dr. Hakim Jones in New Orleans East and paid $500. He said his eyesight hasn't really improved.

2 yrs ago. Life changing. Highly recommend.

Cost me $3500. I refused to shop for discount eye surgery and went with the guy with the best reputation.

Stuff like this is why...

I had mine done by Dr Woo in November of last year. It was around $3200 total.

She did a good job. Saved me from not having to worry about contacts. Have slight dry eye and some starburst at night when driving but it gets better over time

I’m not trying to discourage anyone, but as a lifetime glasses/contacts wearer with astigmatism who thought for years that i’d eventually have LASIK done, i’ve decided not to do it since , with my kinda luck, i’d be part of the tiny percentage that have problems.. but of course there’s risk with anything in life, so your mileage may vary.

Same as me; been wearing glasses since I was a kid. In high school, I started wearing contacts but because of my astigmatism I had to wear the hard/rigid contacts. Those could be very painful to wear and expensive as hell. Each contact was a couple hundred and it sucked if you lost one. I wore hard contacts for many years and kept looking at Lasik but never pulled the trigger.

When soft contacts that could correct astigmatism became available, I've never looked at Lasik again. After wearing hard contacts, soft contacts are nothing to deal with.

With Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), sometimes called Clear Lens Exchange, the eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens to improve vision.

Since you are special.
