Not trying to make this about politics. Should a college have say in who a lawyer represents? Even a POS like Harvey Weinstein. For example, if you boys were at LSU Law School and your law professor had the chance to defend Osama Bin Laden after 9/11, do you believe the school should have the say to fire him? I'd say no. I believe the lawyer should have the right to defend anyone. History reminder that John Adams, patriot and founding father of America, was the defense attorney for the soldiers who committed the Boston Massacre because he thought they were entitled to a fair trial.

and if he taught at a private university, they would have had the right to fire him (assuming all contractual procedures were followed)

At least they had the balls to fire a black guy...

I bet it was the biggest conundrum for them...

Yes, a private institution should have the ability to hire/fire anyone they choose. The odd part is, however, is that I guarantee you that I guarantee you that Harvard would not fire somebody for representing Osama Bin Laden.

Think about James Donovan (the guy Tom Hanks portrayed in Bridge of Spies). His family was threatened and he received a lot of backlash for representing an alleged Soviet spy during the height of the Cold War. Ended up successfully brokering a trade for him and an American POW. He did it because it was his job.

I think attorneys are bound by the law, not by societal norms.

Remember when conservatives raised the issueof Hillary Clinton successfully representing a child predatorin in her brief and early legal career? She was reportedly gloating over winning even though she kne whe was guilty. Bet the powrs taht be at Harvard had no issue with that and railed at anyone who raised the point.

It really shows you how messed up our justice system is

Harvey Weinstein goes free and can rape all the pretty young actresses he wants meanwhile America’s dad is in jail for the color of his skin because a bunch of ugly old black ladies said he “raped” them like 50 years ago

Technically, not fired. They just didn’t renew their deanship.

This is a bad look for a legal institution, private or not. It tells the best and brightest they better not represent certain segments of the population (from the bad to the more benign like conservatives) or else they will be prevented from teaching the younger generation and ostracized from the legal community. It also prevents those who are accused of a crime that might not align with the liberal utopia’s vision from accessing the best legal representation. Slippery slope

Surprised Weinstein didn't go with a female attorney.

Well we were still British at the time, so that had something to do with it.
