Defining bands of music genres

Curious to know what others think, but I have always held certain bands as the definition of some music genres. Meaning that if I were to meet a person that knows nothing about music and I could only select 1 band from each music genre to give them an example of what it sounded like, what band would it be. Doesn't mean most critically acclaimed, best selling, most hits, etc. Just the person or band that represents exactly what the genre is about and how it should sound.
Some of mine:
Rock: AC / DC
Grunge: Nirvana
Thrash: Metallica
Classic rock: Rolling Stones
Heavy metal: Black Sabbath
Progressive: Pink Floyd
Rap: Dr. Dre
Pop: Michael Jackson
Soul: Sam Cooke
Country: Hank Williams Jr.
Industrial: NIN
Techno: Crystal Method
French: The Balfa Bros.
Zydeco: Keith Frank
Let me know who is the better pick for any of them.

Allman Bros are probably my favorite band but if I’m being honest Lynyrd Skynyrd is the band that defined Southern Rock.

Yeah but the Allman invented it

Even if he invented it, I am going with Skynrd as the true expression of what Southern Rock is and sounds like.

Gonna disagree with several of those
Metal: Iron Maiden
Progressive: Rush
Industrial: Ministry
Country: Hank Sr
Prog could have Rush, Yes, or King Crimson. Maybe Dream Theater. I like Pink Floyd but I don't think of them when it comes to prog.
I don't know how you can say Hank Jr over Sr. Johnny Cash Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, George Strait all come to mind before Hank Jr.

I’ve always objected to the Allmans
being described as “southern rock”, because they’re so much more,I.e., blues, jazz, etc.

I'm not sure I'd differentiate rock and classic rock.
Soul--Marvin Gaye.
Rap--I love Dre, but he's a producer. I'd go 2Pac because he's spawned so many imitators.

based on your criteria it's hard to argue too much with your picks. I think the "rock" and "rap" categories are so, SO vast though that you could pick damn near 100 people for each category and not necessarily be wrong.

Jangle pop - The Byrds? Or, would it be something newer.
Power Pop - Big Star? Raspberries?

I love Pink Floyd, but King Crimson defines prog more.

I would have said Yes or ELP.
