Yeah but the Allman invented it

No, the Allman Brothers didn't "invent" Southern Rock. They inspired the artists who's sound would later define what Southern Rock is.

The Allman Brothers were a jazz/blues fusion band and only had a few songs I would categorize as Southern Rock.

But these are singers not bands. Really the biggest country band ever was Alabama.
When I think Southern rock I think of Linyrd Skynyrd or CCR even though they weren't really from the South. Just my .02

Soul--Marvin Gaye. Rap--I love Dre, but he's a producer. I'd go 2Pac because he's spawned so many imitators.

You’re right about Dre not having enough as an artist to qualify. Although, 2Pac gets WAY more credit than he deserves. A Tribe Calked Quest or Run DMC would probably be more ideal.

Even though he stared in Motown, I’ve always thought of classic Marvin Gaye as definitive R&B.

The king of soul is likely Sam Cooke, but Otis Redding is right behind him.

My 1st thought was George Straight but then I changed to Hank Jr. Something about the songs “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound”, “Dinosaur”, and “Family Tradition” just really are what country music should sound like to me.

Alabama is a great pick also, hard to be more country than “Tennessee River” or “My Home’s in Alabama” in my mind.

The others listed are all legends of country but to me each are a little too unique to represent all of country music.

Prog could have Rush, Yes, or King Crimson. Maybe Dream Theater. I like Pink Floyd but I don't think of them when it comes to prog.

I agree with this. I'm as big a PF fan as anybody but I don't really put them in the prog bucket. Neither does Gilmour for that matter. That said, I'm not sure what genre I would put them in. Maybe psychedelic rock?

That's true but that's sort of the problem with genres in the first place. On the one hand, genres are useful for describing what kind of music a band plays. But they can also pigeonhole a band. Most of the bands I like the best don't really fit into a particular box.

re: Defining bands of music genres
Blues - Robert Johnson
Jump Blues - Louis Jordan
Rockabilly - Carl Perkins
Doo Wop - Dion & The Belmonts
Surf Rock - Dick Dale
Folk - Bob Dylan
Power Pop - The Raspberries
Glam - The Sweet
Disco - The Bee Gees

Soul I would go with Otis Redding
Country I'd go with Hank Sr.

This ^^^^ I agree with. The ABB had a wider range of musical stylings, from straight on blues (Stormy Monday, Statesboro Blues) to beautiful acoustic instrumentals (Little Martha) and when Duane and Dicky were hitting the note there wasn’t any jam band before or since that could hang with their melodic intensity.

Nu Metal - Korn

Nu Metal belongs to Linkin Park. No one even comes close to the commercial success they had. Hybrid Theory sold more albums worldwide than most nu metal bands sold over their careers. While Korn was working with Skrillex, LP was making multi platinum remixes with Jay-Z. Korn and others did it first, but Linkin Park perfected it with their first 3 albums (HT, Reanimation, Meteora).
