Catholic officials in New York City demanded on Monday an apology from “Saturday Night Live” and NBC for Pete Davidson’s “disgraceful and offensive” jab at the church in a bit involving R. Kelly.

In the “Weekend Update” segment on the show, the comedian noted that Kelly, a singer facing multiple charges of sexual abuse, “is a monster who should go to jail forever.”

“But if you support the Catholic Church,” he continued (as seen in the clip above), “isn’t that like the same thing as being an R. Kelly fan? I don’t really see the difference, except like one’s music is significantly better.”

The Diocese of Brooklyn blasted the routine in a statement.

“The faithful of our Church are disgusted by the harassment by those in news and entertainment, and this sketch offends millions,” it said. “The mockery of this difficult time in the Church’s history serves no purpose. The clergy sex abuse crisis is shameful, and no one should ever get a laugh at the expense of the victims who have suffered irreparably.”

The church is facing a wave of child sex abuse scandals globally while Kelly has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, some of which allegedly involved underage girls.

“Saturday Night Live” and NBC declined comment.

I mean, the joke wasn’t funny, but that isn’t a reason to get your pointy hat all flustered

If it was a shot at the Jewish community everyone would be up in arms.

Did they demand an apology though?

The article somehow didn't manage to quote that portion of their statement if so.

If you don’t want to be made fun of for diddling kids and covering it up for decades then stop diddling kids and covering it up for decades.

Seems pretty straightforward.

That was an artful spin by the church.
The joke was at the expense of the perpetrators, not the victims.

Love that the faithful of the Church are disgusted by a joke and not, umm, the Church.

Time and energy much better spent getting their house in order and rooting out abuse than worrying about being offended by a joke that was true.

I wonder if Pete Davidson is gonna post about killing himself on instagram again only for SNL to trot out him looking all disheveled to introduce Shaggy or somebody to show the world he’s still alive.

As a Catholic, I have to agree.

I'm Catholic and it was accurate as hell. The Church gets an apology when they stop covering for priests who rape children.

ETA: And Davidson better not be bullied or pressured into apologizing.

This is a weird move by the church.

Shouldn’t they just try to move Pete Davidson to a different parish so that his offensive and hurtful jokes dont hurt anymore NYC residents?
