For those of you who may be excited about the January surplus...
Oh, and for those of you who are fans of trickle-down economics, and the idea that lowering tax rates will somehow increase total tax revenue due to more money being available to drive sales:
So the tax cuts are having a net reduction on federal revenue. Which is fine, I'm fully supportive of lesser federal revenues.
But not only is spending not being cut to compensate, spending is up 8.8 percent.
How can anyone who calls themselves a conservative - Trump Variety or RINO Variety or Establishment Variety - be ok with this? How in the hell are we not cutting spending?
quote:
The federal government recorded a budget surplus in January. But so far this budget year, the total deficit is 77 percent higher than the same period a year ago. The Treasury Department said Tuesday that the deficit for the first four months of this budget year, which began Oct. 1, totaled $310.3 billion. That's up from a deficit of $175.7 billion in the same period a year ago. The surplus in January was $8.7 billion.
For those of you who may be excited about the January surplus...

The $8.7 billion surplus in January was down from a larger $49.2 billion surplus in January 2018. January, a month when both individuals and corporations make tax payments, has run surpluses in 26 of the past 65 years.
Oh, and for those of you who are fans of trickle-down economics, and the idea that lowering tax rates will somehow increase total tax revenue due to more money being available to drive sales:
quote:
From October through January, government revenues total $1.11 trillion, down 1.7 percent from the same period a year ago. Government spending totals $1.15 trillion, up 8.8 percent from the same period a year ago.
So the tax cuts are having a net reduction on federal revenue. Which is fine, I'm fully supportive of lesser federal revenues.

It's not conservativism. They'll have no answer. They don't have principles. They're hypocrites. They will call you names.

Neither side has the political will to gut entitlements and the military industrial complex has made itself relatively untouchable. In short, we're fricked.

Facts are facts, Zach. Don't shoot the messenger. Read the article, the numbers are what they are.

How is Trump supposed to reduce spending by himself? Congress controls the purse. Congress makes all decisions based on money. Executive branch is supposed to enforce it, right? Isn’t that exactly what all you leftists were spouting off about last week with the ED?

Congress has the power of the purse.

Democrats proposing any spending cuts?
No?
Didn't think so.

Yep, and if you are looking to place blame, start with the American voting public. Voters have no interest in supporting Congressmen willing to reduce the deficit. They control the purse, and it's a losing position at the polls.

this was FDR's grand plan decades and decades ago
Even Republican voters would squirm at the thought of cutting social security / medicare / etc.
On top of that, feeding our giant MIC is seen as patriotic
good luck getting votes while stating you want to gut either

Conservative, Trump supporter here. But, doesn't matter who has the purse strings or who is in charge, I do not like the spending of the federal govt.

It's not conservatism, it's Trumpism, whose short term goals occasionally coincide with conservatism. Except where it doesn't, as in the case of deficits, free trade, international relations, sexual probity, humility before God, etc.

NBC does not deal in facts. Liars are what they are.

Help us out here, smart guy. Conservatism would be raising taxes in order to increase revenues (which of course NEVER MATERIALIZES) so that we can continue to INCREASE government spending in perpetuity?
Or maybe conservatism would be to just, you know, get the money somehow. Or print it. Who cares about the details?
