Tacoma prices have gotten out of hand, in 2011 I bought an '08 Tacoma TRD Prerunner with 34k on it for $20K, I drove that truck for 4 years and sold it for $18K.
I haven't had a truck the past few years and want one again, a similar Tacoma this time around looks like it would cost me 30+ used.

I want a Tacoma but with their new facelift, they aren’t seeming to be as reliable and have suspensions issues and I refuse to buy a 3-5 year old truck with 50k miles for the same price as new one off the lot. It’s crazy how high the resale value of Tacomas are.
Tacoma, 4Runners, and Land Cruisers hold their value better than anything not a G Wagen.
On Autotrader, there are lots of Tacoma TRD Pros with $5k+ plus dealer markups.
My f-I-l traded in a 3yr old 4wd Tacoma crewcab, base package, 100k miles. The dealer put it on their lot for $30k.

If new vehicle pricing is too expensive for you, look for a three to four year old vehicle and allow someone else to take the depreciation hit.
It’s not that I can’t afford a new truck, I know that full size trucks can have really good deals on them at the right time and with some good shopping you can find them at a great price, you’d just think that when looking at truck half the size of normal trucks, you’d pay half the price, instead of a price near and maybe more than full-size.

My nephew bought a 2016 Colorado 4-cylinder from me for financial reasons.
- cost he got 2016 truck 9,000 miles for $14k
- gas mileage is around 25 in city to 29 mph Hwy avg
- overall cost on maintenance tires when needed, gas, insurance, and maintenance cost are cheaper
#1 and best reason.
-His wife does not like to drive a full-size truck. She loves to drive the Colorado. He can sneak out and go fishing with me when she needs to haul flowers and stuff home.
He bought new tracker pro 160 and since he bought that we been fishing 3 to 4 days a week on $20 in gas.
His old boat burnt that much in gas on one trip easily. I laugh that was why I sold the boat to him it would easily burn $40 to $50 a trip in fuel. You lose some comfort you get more fishing trips.

Every 3 years I trade in my GMC Denali far a new GMC Denali for the 179 deduction. The price keeps going up and reducing my tax liability even more
As long as resale value continues to climb with price I’m fine

I got a new Tacoma for under 30k at the end of last year. Love mine, and the resale will be through the roof if I decide later on I want something else

I bought a brand new Silverado in 2001. Loved the body style. Decided no need to do this again.
A truck is a truck and I’m keeping this one forever.

As long as gas is this low, its gonna be like this. I switched to a car for a daily and restored an older truck that I only drive on weekends or when I need a truck. The prices of older trucks in good shape is also going up. An older 80's/90's Ford in good shape with 150K miles can run you $10K. But no computers, iron block engines, steel body and the entire truck can be rebuilt with rockauto or LMC truck catalog and a socket wrench. If you don't need a truck as a daily, its a stupid purchase just to show off your truck nuts in the starbucks parking lot. Your dick won't disappear if you drive something less. I owned nothing but trucks for 20 years but at some point the market just gets unreasonable when every slapdick suburbanite is competing for baw status.

drove a brand new F-150 super crew with the SXT package off the lot 2 months ago for $30,500. TTL included and no trade in. Deals are out there to be made.
Even if this is true, this kind of deal are very uncommon and difficult to find.

Then buy a new one?
That's what I wound up doing after Katrina took my paid for Ford Ranger parked in my driveway when it flooded.
I needed a truck and was looking for a used, relatively new model and the prices even then were ridiculous. Throw in the fact after the flood it was a seller's market for trucks and that made pricing them even more insane.
I wound up buying new for just a few grand more than what they wanted for a used truck, and I got a full size one to boot and not a small truck like the Ranger.
Sometimes it just makes sense to bite the bullet and go new.

I have a company replacement ordered. 2019 Silverado and the local dealership fleet sales could only hit $45k.....I got factory fleet at $38k.
While I have to wait 8-12 weeks, it takes off $7k.
And that is a 4x2 LT Texas Edition crew. Far from super fancy and the MSRP was $50k or so. Trucks are really expensive.

k. I’m just lost on how expensive these “entry” trucks are. We’re talking 5-10k more and you’re getting a 2500 durumax (base) , Nissan XD, tundra, v8 f150
Because features cost money. I am not sure why this concept is so hard for folks.
Also, these trucks are night and day better than trucks from 20-30 years ago. Hell the new mid sized gms are pretty much better than the 1/2 tons from then in truck type ratings(towing, etc...) as well

You can get a huge discount off the domestics cause they inflate the price by thousands for MSRP.
If you want a better deal, get a domestic, if you want a reliable long term truck, get a Toyota. You'll pay more, but it will last.

If my '05 F150 ever shits the bed to the point that paying to fix it isn't really cost effective, I think I'm going to look at getting an older truck. Something that's "new" enough to have AC and drive well on the highway, but not disposable like most vehicles these days.

That is 6000 lbs? Is 179 enough gain to be worth as a tax shield?
Posted on 2/13/19 at 7:59 am to SlickRickerz
And they will keep going up in price as long as people are willing to finance them for as long as a home.

not really.
i have a '10 with 125k on it. I've changed the oil every 3-5k, not a scratch on it, and it's in perfect condition. Sorry you've made poor financial choices when it comes to vehicle purchases. And yes, I can still go get $15k for my truck that is 10 years old. Why? Because it will easily run for another 150k miles without a hiccup.
