The Dune movie was good but flawed and just too weird for general appeal. I'll always defend it. Will be interesting to see how the remake does. A lot of big stars have signed on so far, but I doubt it can work for a major release because the material is inaccessible for a wide audience.

Ughh. Pay attention. You don't even need the book. The bugs had been trying to communicate with us but we didn't understand it. They tried to communicate with Ender and he didn't understand until it was too late. They never came back to Earth. They looked like they were about to launch a massive assault because the whole human space force was bearing down on them.
They did a decent job with that movie.

We’ll, there WAS that crappy flick Will Smith and his son made about surviving on some planet somewhere.

If the book didn't exist, the movie would have been mediocre with some cool visuals. The problem is there was a really good book that they shite on.

2nd worst movie ever made behind The Last Airbender.

while there are much worst movies than airbender and after earth in the world. much much worse... M. Night definitely has more than a couple in that list.

There is not a single redeeming quality for that movie. With source material that good and already brought to film, it’s the worst of all time.
After Earth at least has some “so bad it’s good” thing going for it.

I was a huge fan of the book.
I thought the movie was average. I didn’t think it was terrible. I knew going in that it would be hard to adapt to the screen. Some novels just don’t translate well to film. This is one of them.
The problem with Ender is that he represents so many different things to different people, and it’s hard to satisfy any one particular audience with him. For example, a lot of the frustrations with the book sequels to Ender’s Game is that Ender doesn’t act the way many people want him to act, and the stories don’t develop in a way that satisfies the masses.
Movies are made to satisfy the masses. And Ender as a character doesn’t quite fit that mold.

yes its just a movie, but i cant help but to think watching that stupidity, that that is the perfect example of how dangerous liberal thinking idiots are to our future
Get yourself some help and step away from politics for a little while. This is some crazy arse thinking.

But yeah, I've been told it was a poor adaptation. I unfortunately never got around to reading the novel.
It was a TERRIBLE adaptation and would make a fantastic 2 season type run on HBO or something. Ender gets there really young and is there for years, so the story needs time to evolve. Plus, there is all this political stuff which they couldn't even touch in the movie because of time that could be fleshed out in a series...

As I'm sure others have mentioned, the movie didn't do the source material justice. You have to understand, the Formics did not originally see the humans as sentient beings. Because of the structure of their society, and how they communicated, they couldn't understand that humans were individuals, not drones. They didn't understand that the death of each human was analogous to the death of one of their queens.
The Formic Queen, in the novel, conveys to Ender “We did not mean to murder, and when we understood, we never came again.” During the final battle, the queen laments “They did not forgive us, she thought. We will surely die.”
Ender was responsible for the murder of an entire race. Once he understood that the Formics regretted their actions, he knew he couldn't let the species die. In later novels, Ender looks for a home for the Formic queen, so that the species doesn't die out.

It’s crazy how the influence of bloggers and non mainstream media in the Bean series ended up being spot on for today’s world.

The book is ten times better.
I still can't fathom why they ruined the "big reveal" by telling you up front.
In the book, Ender thinks all of the space combat missions he's running through are training simulations. They get progressively harder and harder, forcing him to learn new tactics, build a strong team of fellow trainees, and think completely outside the box. It's a form of the "Kobiashi Maru" from Star Trek. An unwinnable situation that he figures out how to win.
The big reveal at the end, that instead of a simulation, he's been directing real troops through actual battles. He has sacrificed thousands of human lives to win the final battle and completely destroy the "Bugs". And has caused the complete extinction of the only other known intelligent living species in the galaxy.
He is crushed by this realization. He was tricked.
He also finds out that in fact the aliens were the victims in the war. The humans had started it.
It's one of the best sci-fi novels I've ever read.
The movie shite all over it. Thanks Hollywood. Once again you thought you knew better. How many Ender's Game and Ready Player One frick-ups have to happen before you realize that you don't have to change the plot of successful novels? Just tell the fricking story.

The only thing I think they really missed out on in the movie was Peter. The whole Peter/Valentine subplot was left out. The movie just made Peter seem like a big bully. He, and Valentine, were every bit the genius Ender was, just Peter was too evil and Valentine was too good. I hated that they missed exploring that character, but the movie would have been way too long.

While I think the movie is a terrible adaptation of the book, I got a real kick out of the OP complaining about the "SJW idiot" given the career and beliefs of the author Orson Scott Card. And yes, Ender saves the alien in the book as well.

Too bad the sequels are too philosophical to make good movies.

They could still be adventurous if handled with care.
At least we know the Shadow series will never make it. Just reading the synopsis of that is ugh. Anyone know if he really went forward with the Formics are actually probably evil and not that they didn't know what they were doing on the two invasions?

while the turnabout of this story is a huge part of the plot, i believe the buggers struck first, but thinking humanity was a bunch of drones, not sentient beings. therefore humans retaliated.

I must have missed this part. When was it revealed the Formics were really the victims?

i don't think it was that they were "the victims," but that they had a destructive act against earth, not realizing we were intelligent life.
i.e. i stepped on an ant hill. I didn't mean to hurt them, but it obviously killed some of them and destroyed part of their home. but they're just bugs to me. except that the ants are really smart and actually hold a grudge enough to come after me.
