How does Venables not get poached for HC job?

Is he content being a career coordinator? I can't think of a better, more accomplished coordinator who hasn't made the next step. He's pushing 50 now, not exactly a young coach anymore

it appears he's fine being DC under Dabo at Clemson
*ETA: does he even really interview that often for jobs?

Miami (Mark Richt retired, Manny Diaz hired)
Maryland (D. J. Durkin fired, Mike Locksley hired)
Colorado (Mike MacIntyre fired, Mel Tucker hired)
Only three schools that would pay their head coach more than 2 mil (which is what Venables makes now) has hired coordinators as head coaches.
Most hires are head coaches from smaller coaches before getting a top D1 head coaching job

His name pops up every once in a while but he's in a good spot.

Kirby Smart at UGA.
Have to think he’s on the level of coordinator that could land a big job. He’s been that good for that long.

I'm not saying he isn't good enough. I was just saying more times than not, a previous head coach at a small school gets it over a top level coordinator.

I think he is mildly autistic. Word is he interviews like a robot.

Would have left for Kansas state if he wanted to leave IMO. He has a great gig and is well paid. Why leave?

well the jets have shown that even autistic people can be head coaches

Looks like it!
Not everyone wants to be the CEO of a business.
Plus, he's being paid pretty damn well to only worry about the defense.
Top assistants are being paid what top HC were just 10-12 years ago.
2006, Bob stoops was one of the highest paid HC at $3MM

I thought Texas Tech reached out to him, but he didn't entertain it. Don't blame him one bit, either.

Werent there rumbles of something fairly bad in his past involving a coed at Kstate?

Venables is second highest paid coordinator behind Aranda.
I think both have at the very least first right of refusal if and when their present HCs are fired or leave.
Dabo will make the inevitable move to AL and Venables will take over.
If Aranda is still around when O wears out his welcome, he will get the job.

Why do people think Dabo will leave Clemson for Alabama? Why leave a great situation where they love you to replace to GOAT? You gotta figure Clemson would pay him whatever it took to keep him -- and the difference between making $8 million a year at Clemson and $9 million a year at Alabama is negligible. You're making $8 million a year, you can buy whatever you want and your kids won't have to worry about working if you have any financial sense.

Think he's biding his time for a big job. He's not leaving to coach at Tulsa or something like that. He's waiting for USC, ND, something like that.

Not everything is about money or getting a title next to your name. I'm sure if the right situation presented itself, he would look seriously at it, but overall DCs don't have a great success rate as HCs. I know there are some, but I think more DCs have failed than succeeded! Hey, he's also happy and making a good deal of money, so I feel confident in saying life ain't that bad in the Venables' household!

More OCs have failed than succeeded as well.
The most successful HC ever was a DC.
