Edit: Come on now.. this can't be a *coincidence. Was this really in the strategic plan before all of the Together Baton Rouge stuff started?

quote:

Thompson Pipe Group will close down its Zachary manufacturing plant later this year, a move that will impact 120 workers as the region faces its third announced plant closure in a week.

quote:

Detlev Schlorke, Thompson Pipe Group vice president, said the firm is consolidating the plant into its Alvarado, Texas, operations, and is offering all 120 employees jobs in Texas.

quote:

Thompson Pipe is the third company in a week to announce a closure in the Zachary area. Georgia-Pacific said last week it would shut down a major division of its Port Hudson paper mill and lay off 650 people at the plant. That closure will likely take place this spring and leave that plant with 300 jobs. On Tuesday, German chemical giant BASF confirmed it will close its chemical plant in Zachary, where it made specialty chemicals and battery components, affecting 54 workers.

quote:

We’re relocating it because we have a huge facility in Alvarado,” Schlorke said. “It doesn’t make sense to have this plant sitting here as opposed to consolidating resources in Alvarado.” “This is just a strategic plan we’ve had in place for many years,”

It's ok. They're going to relocate the plant to St. George.

If they had a diverse staff then together Baton Rouge wouldn’t have made them leave. All businesses should embrace diversity like the Popeyes on staring does

120 workers get to move them and their families to right outside DFW, save on insurance and state tax, plus have TCU for their kids to go to.

You mean where the TBR people have called for stronger oversight of FUTURE ITEP grants?

If the company was planning some expansion at the plant, was counting on ITEP for the expansion, and decided to not even try for the ITEP, and with no expansion, the plant no longer makes sense to keep going as it is, then you might have a point.

That's a lot to consider.

Industrial companies get leaner as we go along. If this is a small plant in their system and a bigger plant can handle all the work, that's an easy decision to make.

Baws in Zachary will be moving to TX and will be amazed at the schools, no state income tax, car insurance 1/2, etc...

I do wonder how many of the 120 will indeed move to TX

But something is going on in Zachary. This is the third devastating blow to Zachary in a week and for a relatively small city, its a tremendous blow.
