Maybe he’s going to the best Doctor for his condition
My pastor has had major cancer treatments over the last 5 years. The waitlist to get on clinical trials in the US was limited and he got accepted to one in the UK. FDA has expanded trials to where he could come here at this point.
While I think the US does most of the research and advances health care more than any other Nairobi to act like we have the best specialists in every single category at the best cost is asinine.

So a country less populated than California 84% of which is Caucasian can pull off socialized medicine? Color me shocked.

Most Canadian hospitals are privately owned. This hospital is privately owned they get most of its revenue from the Ontario Government. They accept Ontario insurance and if you read the article they gets most of its funding from the government.
You keep repeating this as if it's some kinda gotcha. Why do you think this sets Shouldice apart from American hospitals in this aspect? Do you know what the payer mix is for Shouldice? How many are out of pocket? The payer mix for an average U.S. hospital?

I guess he can't find healthcare in the US to suit his needs.
Or he's electing to have his surgery performed at a world-renowned hospital which happens to be the only one that specifically treats hernias. And he's fortunate enough to do so out of pocket.

This is more fake news on a story that has been terribly reported from day one — this is a private, world renowned hospital separate from any system and people come from around the world to pay cash for their services,”
Maybe read the article you post.

I guess Canadians like how they can afford their healthcare system because America is going broke defending the entire civilized world. Imagine if other countries actually contributed to keeping the peace or even if the US could send every country that we save a bill, with profit, for the cost, including $$$ for the survivors of every soldier killed defending the ungrateful pieces of shite

Rand Paul is paying out of pocket at a private hospital and genius liberals claim this means socialism is good.

Shouldice Hernia Hospital markets itself as "the global leader in non-mesh hernia repair," according to the clinic's website.
If I had a hernia I would go anywhere that had non-mesh hernia repair. Research yourself if you don't know why.
If the loon leftist prog neighbor didn't break his ribs and puncture Rand's lung; Rand's personal health would not be advertised and used as a cognitively impaired 'gotcha'.

Wonder what his wait time was vs Canadians in their system.

Boy you make one hell of an argument and gotcha. I’m definitely gonna be rethinking my entire worldview now.
Thanks for helping me choose.

quote:there are actually 2 health Care system in Canada. The one the poor schmuks have to use that leaves you on a list needing surgery hoping that you'll die before it's scheduled, and the one that wealthy Canadians purchase private health insurance to access. The private one is pretty good, the public one is terrible
This is very interesting. I thought conservatives and Liberatards said Canada's healthcare was awful with long waiting lists.

Stupid communist stretching to make a stupid argument about a fake news story.

This hospital is accessible to the average Canadian as well. It's covered by the same system that Rand and stupid fricks like him claim don't work. As far as wait times... says at the bottom of the page no referrals are required and walk ins are welcome so I guess that answers that question.

Ontario Patients
Ontario’s Hospital Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers all costs to Ontario residents for public ward rate hospital accommodation and physician services.
Semi-private rooms are available at an additional cost. Patients with private insurance may be eligible for reimbursement on submission of paperwork we provide to you on discharge. We do not bill insurance companies directly on your behalf.
All charges are payable on admission by credit card, bank draft or cash.
Non-Ontario Canadian Resident Patients
Provincial health insurance plans cover all costs to Canadian residents for public ward rate hospital accommodation and physician services. Hospital ward charges are billed directly to respective provincial health ministries, with applicable physician services subject to payment by patients on admission. These fees may be submitted to provincial health plans for reimbursement based on paperwork provided to you on discharge. The amount you will be reimbursed will be dependent on your provinces applicable schedule of medical fees.
All qualifying patients will receive an admission letter with a breakdown of fees specific to their surgical procedure and related hospital stay.

US and International Patients
All patients who have submitted their medical questionnaire for assessment and have been qualified for surgery will receive a letter outlining our estimated fees specific to their stated surgical procedure and related hospital stay. Patients with private insurance coverage may be eligible for reimbursement on submission of paperwork provided to you. We do not bill insurance companies on your behalf, however, Shouldice Hospital has no-cost consultants trained to help you with your claim (as foreign insurance coverage is complicated we encourage all patients to pre-approve their coverage prior to admission).

This has to be one of the most appallingly asinine posts I've read in a long time. Did you even read the article?
1. Rand Paul isn't Canadian.
2. It's a private hospital.
3. He's paying out of pocket for the surgery.
4. Thus, the treatment he's getting has ZERO, NOTHING, NADA to do with Canada's mythically phantasmagorical socialized health care system that is powered by unicorn farts, rainbows, and NPC daydreams.
Reading comprehension: don't post on teh interwebz without it.

That's how it works. Most facilities are private. The government pays the bill which is funded by taxpayers. Did you really think all the hospitals, clinics, and medical personnel were all government run? Why don't you actually research shite. So he's paying out of pocket but he's still using a facility that probably gets a good deal of revenue from the government.

guess he believes that Canada has superior health care.
You are confusing two issues. One is whether the Canadian system can offer a patient certain things that our system, mired in corporate profits and liability considerations cannot. This is true. The other is the long term financial viability of such a system, particularly since the system south of their border has now been replaced by Obamacare.
Case in point, if I was an American patient with atrial fibrillation I would absolutely seek out a Canadian electrophysiologist to see if I was a candidate for ablation instead of mindlessly taking a NOAC or Warfarin for the rest of my life.
And when it comes to surgery the skill of the individual surgeon is a major consideration.
At any rate, as Obamacare continues to damage our medical system you will only see the amount of medical tourism increase.
