A lot of good choices. I'll add Watchmens opening. I love the montage with Bob Dylan's music playing.

The actual opening scene from Watchmen is the murder of The Comedian. But if you include the montage as a par of the open then I'm changing my vote to Watchmen.

Forgot about that. It's been a while since I've seen it. But that montage has always stood out to me. It's simply brilliant.

I have it memorized. The first sound that you hear is the tea kettle whistling.

All great choices

Not really an opening scene per say, but I remember walking into Fellowship of the Ring not really knowing LOTR very well and the opening 10 minute monologue blew me away and i was hooked.

I'm just gonna go with the first ones I thought of and they couldn't be more different.

(even though SPR and Raiders are tough to beat)

I love the little nuances and slow-burn of that opening scene and you don't even know what they are waiting for...just a train. Flies buzz around, nobody talks, they grunt, fiddle with their guns, the station agent hides. There's no music just the sounds of an old train depot.

And I thought of this:

That's how much it reasonates. It was quite shocking such a cold open to the horror genre.

While not one I would say is the greatest, the Abrams Star Trek opening scene is pretty fantastic.

The opening to Vanilla Sky is my favorite of all time...Cool shots of NYC in silence...Penelope Cruz whispering "Open Your Eyes", to Radioheads "everything is its right place"

LOL. What?

TMP’s intro with the Klingons attacking V’Ger was way better than ST 09 as a whole.

The fact that she became a main character in 2 Disney movies is funny to me. Close your eyes and listen to that scene, but think of Vanelope from Wreck It Ralph.

SPR for its emotional impact. Can't really think of anything else that does it to that level. Someone asked whether the cemetery scene or Normandy, but I like to think of these two as one, equally reliant on the other for it's overall impact. You throw in John Williams and it doesn't get better.

Inglorious Basterds is also great if you need a prime example of a scene firing on all cylinders, arguably one of Tarantino's best. The suspense is palpable. Waltz might be the most charismatic SS frick to ever be on film

LINK

Nolan is usually dependable on giving a great opening. TDK set the tone to perfection in that scene, and sent the movie on its way never letting up once.

LINK

TDKR isn't too shabby either, from a technical standpoint. The introduction of Bane brought forth many drunken nights of my buddies and me tossing out Bane-voice quotes afterwards

LINK

There are quite a few more, but my age has biased my list to recent, yet memorable, scenes

EDIT: How could I almost forget one of Ridley Scott's best?

I actually almost listed TDK, but I went with Infinity Wars because it also set the said tone (good guys are in a LOT of trouble, Thanos isn’t effing around, it will take sacrifice and much much more to overcome Thanos), but had lasting consequence. Losing Loki early in the battle to come was a bigtime blow. Heimdall’s last act being sending Hulk back to earth was clutch. Hulk not being able to hulk up because of the ship’s battle.

Saving Private Ryan

What you are thinking of is not the opening scene. Opening scene is not even in the same time period.

If it had anything to do with the actual movie, I would nominate the opening montage from Magnolia. But alas, it was just some cool shite that PT Anderson seemed to just want in a movie.
