Damn right he could. He had great ball instincts, and intercepted 25+ passes.

I mean he’d probably have a hard time in space with the more explosive skill players but so do most linebackers. But playing the big physical run stopping game...absolutely.

He could, but he's 76. He'd likely get a few votes for the Pro Bowl, but I doubt he'd make it.

I hate comparing past legends of the game to current players, really think it ought to be the converse since the predecessors set the precedent and were influences but I think Butkus would basically be like Urlacher in today's game, a prototype not sure how long his career would be because his greatest strength (the reckless abandon with which he tackled and converged on a ball carrier) was his downfall in causing career-ending injuries and rendering only a nine-year career

Of course he could still play today if he was in his prime. The guy was an animal and that kind of talent transcends time. Just like Walter Payton being a productive running back in today's game, it's a no brainer.

If Butkus could tackle OJ Simpson who was a world class sprinter; on the 4X100 relay team that shattered the WR...

I don't think he'd have trouble tackling today's backs.

Shite, some of you act like he played in 1880.

He had the size of today and was super instinctual at a position that is perhaps the most instinctual.

He would be very good on obvious run downs, but not much more, he is in his mid 70’s
