2009: lol that’s funny - never thought of that before. This should make for an interesting debate.
2018: kill me

Is it though? Change it to a retirement party after hours in the middle of August and the plot is basically the same.
It is.
You can't take out a main part of the plot and try to replace it with something else and then claim that makes it not a Christmas movie. That's like saying if you change the time of NL's Christmas Vacation to 4th of July, it is no longer a Christmas movie....well no shite. That's the whole point.
It wasn't a retirement party in August. It was a Christmas party. That is the entire reason that people are there. And Christmas themes and things pop up throughout the entire movie.
It's not even a movie that randomly happens to have Christmas in it. It is central to the plot of the movie and is rampant throughout.

Change the setting for A Christmas Story to a road trip to Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss and you get the same adult waxing nostalgic about his youth plot too.

Why would John McClane have visited his family across the USA for a retirement party in the middle of August? He wouldn't have been there had it not been for Christmas.

It’s definitely a Christmas movie.
John McClane is coming home FOR CHRISTMAS attempting to patch things up with his estranged wife. He attends a CHRISTMAS PARTY and then just so happens to run into a terrorist plot. He easily handles these terrorists, reconciles with Holly, and the viewer assumes they had a merry Christmas.
Total Christmas movie.

This makes me question your expertise on the movie

This is the definition of a Christmas movie?

It's literally ALL they play from the middle of October - Christmas AND for the entire month of July. It's a good barometer if nothing else.

Why would people want to question this?
Of course it is.
Christmas Music, Christmas Party, Happens on Christmas Eve, Family is a central motivator to the plot. Santa Hat, Lights.

Yes, top 10 all time. Hallmark Channel is for women and gheys. Die Hard is for neither.
Hope you and your boyfriend have a Merry Christmas

By that standard anything not involving Santa Clause isn’t a Christmas movie.

Well... uhh.... in my defense, I didn't know that. So I guess that it is a Christmas movie. Somebody needs to tell Bruce, though.

If you take Christmas out of NL, it changes everything about the movie. You need to have different scenes entirely because the vast majority of the film is Christmas traditions. If you change die hard it won’t effect the film that much. You are over playing this lame arse debate from 10 years ago.

So according to you It's A Wonderful Life is not a Christmas movie.
