Die Hard is essentially the same movie with a few minor changes, A Christmas Story is fundamentally changed with entire scenes based on Christmas that can't be changed

Your original point changed a central plot element. Change Christmas to birthday, and what's the result? I don't care about reshoots or edits.
It's not a central plot point to die hard, you could edit it out of the movie and it would be coherent good movie without reshoots. That would be tough to do for a good portion of A Christmas Story. You could reduce it from a movie to a TV show format though.

In my family, on Christmas Eve after opening presents and having a few (okay, a lot) of holiday cheer, we'd put an old DVD of Die Hard on and enjoy the spirits.

Guess Just Friends is a Christmas movie...

If you take Christmas out of NL, it changes everything about the movie. You need to have different scenes entirely because the vast majority of the film is Christmas traditions. If you change die hard it won’t effect the film that much. You are over playing this lame arse debate from 10 years ago.
The main thrust of the conflict in the film, outside of the family, has to do with an End of Year Bonus. Christmas only provides the trappings of the story about a suburban father stretched between providing for his family and working for the man.
This materializes in a few locations:
- Contrasted against his brother Randy's situation
- Spurs his mid life crises via Mary and the dream about Mary
- The entire pool arc
- His disassociation with his family
- His failure at everything from lights to Turkey
- The Kidnapping (which yes, is a Christmas gift, but knowing Randy he would have kidnapped someone outside of Christmas)
Therefore, via your definition, it is not a Christmas film. It's a Mid-Life Crises Film.

This isn't anything near as important as you think it is.
If Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, A Christmas Story and Christian Vacation aren't Christmas movies.

Nonsense. Show me an edit of Die Hard without Christmas in it and I'll show you a different movie.

One of our local Amstar theaters is showing it along with some other Christmas classics for special Flasback screenings the next couple of weeks.
So...yes but in the same vein as Home Alone, which takes place during Christmas. It could have taken place June and pretty much be the same movie minus the coats, Christmas lights and the one Santa scene.

Yes. I wonder how this is still even up for debate.
It's set during Christmas. Christmas is a major part of what drives the plot. He dresses up a bad guy as Santa and taunts the bad boss with "Ho, ho, ho."
There isn't any reasonable argument that it isn't a Christmas movie, other than the "R" rating, the profanity and violence supporting that rating and it was a Summer release.
But, outside of those factors, it is 100% a Christmas movie.

What's a Christmas movie?
1) A movie centered around Christmas or the themes of Christmas
or...
2) A movie that takes place during Christmas
Since I fall into category 1 and since Die Hard has no Christmas themes, nor is it centered around Christmas but is a heist flick taking place during Christmas time...
I'd have to say no.
Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, Scrooged, A Christmas Carol, Miracle on 34th Street, Grinch, etc. are Christmas movies.
And no, It's a Wonderful Life isn't a Christmas movie either because it has nothing to do with Christmas except for the final scene and that's just a backdrop to show people singing and goodwill.
If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, Trading Places is a Christmas movie.

Yes. Who cares why it isn’t on Hallmark?

Then how do you edit out an abandoned 32 story building in downtown LA any time other than Christmas? If the building & garage aren't abandoned, are they able to take over the building as easy as they do while having a floor full of 30+ hostages?
Also, it's been awhile but wasn't the reason they were having a hard time shutting off the power is because the utility guy was worried about what the mayor would say when he shut down the grid during Christmas Eve?
Finally, I recall the news van being scare because it was Christmas; not a central part to the story, but just another factor that is affected by the Christmas theme.

I think you can add Elf to that list, I don't think it has ever been shown on the Hallmark Channel

They aren't.

They have nothing to do with Christmas.
Unless Mortimor Duke was Santa Claus and trying to teach Winthrop a lesson ala A Christmas Carol.

Still under construction and a lot of the building wasn’t being used. That’s already part of the film and why it was so empty for a Japanese company.

I work for a power company, doesn’t matter the time of day or year. Purposely shutting down the power grid in a city is not a good fricking idea.

Wrong. For both.
Give it another try.

Meh. While I don't think that Christmas was as integral to the plot of Trading Places, it was pretty significant - perhaps a little more New Year's (although they clearly had some issues with that in the script, as they ended up with costumes for New Year's, but whatever) because of the seasonal references.
But, Christmas is so interwoven with Die Hard the film is unimaginable without it.
