California officially became the first state in the nation on Wednesday, Dec. 5 to require homes built in 2020 and later be solar powered.

“These provisions really are historic and will be a beacon of light for the rest of the country,” said Kent Sasaki, a structural engineer and one of six commissioners voting for the new energy code. “(It’s) the beginning of substantial improvement in how we produce energy and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.”

The new provisions are expected to dramatically boost the number of rooftop solar panels in the Golden State. Last year, builders took out permits for more than 115,000 new homes — almost half of them for single-family homes.

While nobody spoke Wednesday in opposition to the new provisions, the commission received more than 300 letters from around the state opposing the solar mandate because of the added cost.

Energy officials estimated the provisions will add $10,000 to the cost of building a single-family home, about $8,400 from adding solar and about $1,500 for making homes more energy-efficient. But those costs would be offset by lower utility bills over the 30-year lifespan of the solar panels.

“With median home prices in California already more than double the national average, this decision will make it even more difficult for the average Californian to afford a home,” added a letter signed by Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-Yuba City.

Good: Renewable resource, you aren't as dependent on our antiquated power infrastructure

Bad: An already expensive housing market gets more expensive

So what happens if people don't want to do the maintenance on them and they stop working? Are the required to have them operational all the time?

Honestly, in Cali they probably should. But I can see them turning around and saying that the solar panels look ugly so they won't want them and they'll just have to continue creating electricity out of fairy dust and unicorn farts so they don't have to see where it comes from.

Yes, a beacon of light for anyone who has shitty priorities.

There may be no jobs, and there might be homeless people everywhere. BUT GODDAMMIT LOOK AT THOSE SOLAR PANELS!

Dont people in California complain about housing costs enough already? I doubt this makes them any cheaper.

They might need this though. Don't they already get power from other states like Arizona?

Does it say how many solar panels or what percentage of your roof must be covered in solar panels? I wonder if you could just put one tiny little panel on part of the roof nobody really looks at and then pass inspection.

I doubt subsidizing solar panels on all new homes is cheaper than getting power from other nearby states.

Sounds like 2019 is going to be a good year to be a homebuilder in California.

So, which state legislator's family is big into solar panel manufacturing or sales?

Dumb as shite. The estimates are completely unrealistic, this will do more to hurt prospective home-buyers, now and into the future, than curb pollution or save homeowners money. The comically uneducated will applaud this though, they always do.

False.

You are gonna need that power infrastructure real bad after a couple cloudy days.

The unintended consequences from this should be interesting to watch.
