This past weekend I attended a family member's wedding and I must say it was real nice. The reception had a live band, open bar and the food was pretty good. Probably around 100 people attended, it was pretty packed. I understand it is a big day for the bride and groom and they want good memories of their wedding day, but why waste so much money on one day and five years or less down the road the marriage may end up in a divorce?

How else can you show up your friends on your parent's dime?

Why worry about what other people are doing with their lives? Enjoy the free booze and food and pass a great time.

That's a pretty pessimistic way to go into marriage

Why spend money on anything at all other than food and shelter?

Would much rather go to courthouse and have a party/reception afterwards

Too much made about a 15-30 min deal. Poor money management.

How much do you think they spent? You didn't even say what you thought was an expensive amount...

completely agree. never let your wife have anything nice, especially early on. that way she wont ever expect anything from you.

Money is not nearly as important as time. And it is a waste of time to worry about what other people are doing with their money.

It should be a once in a lifetime event. Celebrate with all your family and friends. Enjoy.

Look at it long term. Mine now comes to less than $300 a year.

From my experience the grooms don't give two shits about the wedding day. It's all about the bride feeling like a fairy-tale princess

Narcissism, mainly, and typically on the bride’s part.

A lot of the psychology involved is the bride wanting to feel like a princess and have a day all about her.

The groom could typically care less as long as he gets laid.

I'm more of a Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell type, but to each his or her own.

The only important thing is that the two people in the relationship agree on it all.

My ex and I had an agreement with her father that we would do justice of the peace and pocket the wedding money

Your friends and family don't live forever either. It's worth the celebration if done right.
