I've bought 2 and they've been really shitty. Any of you handy contractor folk use one that actually does the job and that you would recommend?

I always test them on myself and they work on me.

Lots of women find me and call me a stud.

Mine was close enough. Hung up a large tv and the dry wall didn't crack and it's still up after a few years. But it was frustrating marking them when going left to right, and then trying again right to left and they have seemingly moved. So I try again, nothing. So partially used the finder and knocking on the wall to confirm.

Just do what I do and drill a bunch of holes in the wall until you find one.

just refinished a powder room and i can assure you that studfinders on the market today are not reliable.

the old knuckle tapping, pilot hole, and measuring tape are a tried and true method

Stud Buddy. $9.99 at Home Depot. It's got a name that's just begging to be made fun of, but it has a strong magnet in and doesn't mark a painted wall.

Can't help you with the electronic ones. I wanted to buy one, but all of them under $50 seem to have mixed reviews.

I just use a hammer and tap the wall. It takes a while to aquire that skill though.

Look up stud buddy. I've used it quite a few times and never missed a stud.

I have a Stanley one and it’s hit or miss. You have to make sure you do the first click on blank wall, then move it over

I have an inexpensive Stanley that works well. Bought it at lowes.

Had another (different brand) that didn't work worth a crap.

This is the one I have:

I do the knock test to get close and then use a thin sewing pin to test. Push it through the sheetrock until you hit the stud... if the pin is small enough it doesn't leave a noticeable mark.

They work by finding the nails in the studs.

Start your search about 4 feet down from the ceiling and either 8 feet or 12 feet from the corner.

Most drywall on residential walls is 4'x12' but some is 4'x8'.

Home Depot

I have this one and it works pretty well. I like it because it has a way of showing you how much it is seeing behind the wall. All my attempts at hitting studs have been ~97% while using it.
