For all the ones posting anecdotes about 1 or 2 holdouts because of some sjw motive, I have a thought experiment for you. What if someone was being tried for sexual assault in a city like Baton Rouge or New Orleans and you had an entirely woman/sjw/minority jury, save for one or two conservative minds?

When you're trying to prove things beyond a reasonable doubt, the 10-2 thing seems merely to protect the courts from the unreasonable people.
All these anecdotal stories of people refusing to change their opinion in light of the evidence are stories of people who are not upholding their obligations as a juror. They are not being reasonable.

Do you think our criminal justice system functions better than the rest of the country?

No. But I don't think a unanimous jury would fix the problems.

So people like Antonin Scalia are SJW's in your book? I think this is for capital offenses . If you are going to permanently take an individual's liberty , then I don't think it is too much to ask that the individual has the righto a jury conviction where the jury as a whole was in unanimity

This one is an obvious YES vote. This isn’t political. All the ultra conservative people I know are voting YES.
Use your brain, your story cuts the other way too doesn’t it?
SJWs are living rent free in your mind

Capital offenses already require a unanimous decision.
Here's the thing though, life without parole does not! 10-2 is apparently enough for folks here to allow the government to strip away a person's rights for life. Going unanimous also allows a check against the leverage DAs have to get plea bargains. Don't see how people who are concerned with the power of the government would support keeping it the same, unless there's some other reason clouding their opinion...

I mean, I understand "no" in the context of our dysfunctional population. I just think it's somewhat silly for people here to decry the power of the state or the potential of "me too" abuse while also supporting 10/12 juries

I think the "there's going to be one black person on the jury who's going to refuse to convict another black person" argument is horrible.
But for those people think of it the other way.
You get arrested for something in Orleans parish. There's only one white person on the jury. Good luck.

Still no. Hung jury. State gets to retry.
D'oh! You're right.
Okay then, "were this change to pass that guy would have caused the state to at least double its prosecution costs because he would have had to be tried again".

Dont worry- they only convict the guilty, remember?
Its not like Louisiana has ever had an issue with this.

Mostly because a lot of the small govt conservatives here have no problem giving the govt more power.

I was on a jury once and we convicted this black guy for robbery and assault on a business owner who was walking to his vehicle after closing. The evidence was overwhelming and we came back with a 11/12 verdict. The one standout, a black girl, who no matter what, did not want to convict him. Never presented an argument for why she believes he was innocent. Was firm on her decision. Vote NO, guys.
And because it was 10/12 requirement, no discussion was even necessary.
The fact of the matter is there are reasonable reasons for both the 10/12 and unanimous jury requirements.
