Questions about the teaching profession.

Why do most teachers complain about being a teacher? Education is known to be one of the easier degrees to get.
Is it a choice just like other professions? You could always go back to school to get another degree that pays better.
Do you believe teacher pay is fair? I realize that not working in the classroom for 1/4 of the year is one factor why its paid low. Also, do teachers unions hurt the salaries overall?
Note: this isnt a career change thread, I'm just asking.

go read the other 11 billion "why teachers complain" threads.

For some, it's a target rich environment...
I think most complain now because of how some of the kids act. Not much discipline anymore.

Is what your question should be. Every working stiff at every job on the planet complains about somethign about their job, it's simply the nature of working. Just because teachers may have summers off doesn't mean there arne't shitty parts of the job too. I mean hell, would you want to babysit 30 kids every day? I sure wouldn't.

They live in a bubble. Government jobs are not the "real world."

True.

Yes. They get raises based on the state system whether or not they're good at their job.

Teachers by in large don't get paid too much, however I wish that STEM teachers could get paid more so we could attract more talented people (As a whole) to teaching STEM. In fact if I ever got rich I think I would start a program of sorts to give STEM teachers a bonus yearly to raise their salaries if they met some criteria.

Teacher/Coach here that left the job for more money but have gone back this year. Teaching isn't a hard job but just like any job in the Government there are things you are forced to do that are stupid and unneeded. The paperwork required of a teacher now is crazy dumb. 10% of the job now is actually teaching.

I did some google searches. Average teacher salary is $56,000. But that’s for 9 months work. Extrapolate that over 12 months, and they are making the equivalent of $75,000 on average.
Then I looked up the average salary of an accountant. It’s $76,000.
So the average teacher salary is equal to the average salary of an accountant.
That to me seems completely reasonable and doesn’t seem like teachers are underpaid.

Kids, parents, and administration. My wife had a kid call her a prostitute a few weeks ago and another that told her he was going to peel her skin off. Both were in 3rd grade and neither were suspended, so I give her a pass when she complains.

Depends. My wife makes around $47k, which is more than fair. At a previous school she had teachers making mid $30k, which is way too low.

Kids act like disrespectful little bastards and the parents are not held to account for anything.
Meanwhile, the admins hold teachers accountable for everything with little to no support against the parents.
No reimbursement for supplies, etc for the room or kids.

Why does anyone complain about their job? Teachers are just mostly female, so it's over dramatic and all over social media.

I do feel sorry for some, especially those who teach in the inner city or in poorer districts.
But I know some that are in solid districts here in Texas whom still complain.
It’s a typical case of overvalued self-importance than anything else.

Apparently teaching is all the time off one can enjoy, plus all the sex one can handle, usually jail free if a female teacher. Plus, free bus trips to/from the State Capital to hold organizational meetups and hookups on the Capital Steps. All while raking the taxpayers money.

Majority of teachers are women, so I say it's to get sympathy/attention.

I don't know. They're the ones who chose to go back to middle/high school. Every teacher I know that I went to school with fricking hated school.
My first question to them is "why did you choose to go back to the place you hated so much for the rest of you're life?" And I usually get some for of "well, I thought it would be easier than this."

Several reasons (anecdotal - my wife and 2 daughters are all counselors or teachers; also numerous friends and several cousins - they have worked in a variety of different school systems in different states). This comes from them...
1. lack of accountability. Too many modern parents have no discipline over older kids.
2. lack of parental role. Too many parents have no awareness of their child's behavior patterns and no willingness to hear about problem behavior "not my son/daughter - he/she's a good kid - teacher is incompetent or hates my child" - and these parents are often either altogether absent, have unrealistic expectations, or else are unreasonably demanding.
3. dysfunctional family life at home.
4. unreasonable pressures and increasing demands on teachers/counselors by school boards/legislative bodies to teach for mandated testing, leaving less and less class time for actual instruction or counseling.
5. failure to recognize teachers as professionals in their own right; few actual choices given to teachers/counselors
6. political pressure from local school boards to keep parents happy often leads to impotent administrators in the local schools, which means less and less on-site support for teachers in the event of some inevitable student/teacher/parent issues when they may arise. You should hear what goes on in some parent/teacher conferences.
7. Weak or highly politicized unions - especially in right to work states like Florida means teachers are often left hanging on the line in times of legit complaint.
8. Shootings in random schools leave a lot to be desired for overall school security. Arming teachers may sound politically sexy, but think about that for a minute. Would you have wanted your screaming Jr. High PE coach to have had a gun on any given day in the locker room?
9. low pay compared with other professionals.
10. less and less actual job satisfaction due to all of the above. Many excellent teachers are leaving the profession. Fewer college grads are entering it. That leaves... who? teaching our children and grandchildren.
Sure there are some rotten apples in any teacher barrel. But the vast majority of them are quite devoted to teaching children, not feathering the nest for some bloated bureaucrats, jumping through political hoops, or coddling insane or incompetent parents.

You get to work half a year and frick underage kids with only the threat of probation. Doesn’t seem like a bad gig.

They don’t complain more than any other people. The OT just has a thing for bitching about teachers

My wife is a teacher and loves it. She can't imagine doing anything else. She even teaches ~180 mostly low-income ESL 5th graders. She's a saint for some of the shite she puts up with, so I don't mind her occasional bitching. Everyone occasionally bitches about there job.
