Help me convince my husband to go to the cardiologist ...

He’s 53. Not overweight, not a smoker, occasional drinker. Eats very healthy diet (right now, keto, but usually paleo with some cheats now and then). Exercises (runs, lift weights). Takes no medication. Blood pressure usually between 130 and 140 over 85.
For the past maybe 10 years, he has had several episodes where, after or during exercise, he gets extremely light-headed, nauseated, cold and clammy, dizzy, and a few times, a tiny bit disoriented. It takes a long time for him to feel better. He has had similar episodes not related to exercise that just occur out of the blue (twice in restaurants — weird!).
It happened again today after a run. He went to a GP about this two years ago who said it was a vasovagal response and to drink more water. Husband already does drink water all day.
Should we look further in to this? Does he need to see a cardiologist and bypass the GP?

Wouldn’t hurt to get checked out. Could be an arrhythmia or exercise induced ischemia. Or it could be vasovagul like you said. It’s concerning if it’s repeatable with exercise but 10 years of it is a long time for something more serious not to pop up. At least a treadmill stress test would show possible ischemic changes on EKG with exercise. It’s a simple test and takes 30 minutes. I’d go, but I work for a cardiovascular practice so I might be a little biased. Lol

He might be drinking enough water but he isn’t getting the necessary electrolytes. No reason to go to a drug dealing doctor over this. He needs to drink something along the lines of this daily...
Water - 2L
Potassium Chloride Powder (no salt, nu salt found at grocery store) - 1 tsp
Sodium Chloride (Pink Himalayan Sea Salt) - 1/2 tsp
Sodium Bicarbonate (food grade baking soda) - 1 tsp
Magnesium sulfate (food grade epsom salt) - 1/2 tsp

Yup, needs that SNAKE juice!
Seriously though, sounds like electrolyte imbalance.

Depends on your insurance. Does your insurance require a referral from your PCP before seeing a specialist?

Agree with others on electrolytes; I see nothing here suggesting a need for a cardiologist. Wouldn't hurt to go to GP and have basic bloodwork done.

Yes
I'd see GP first just to say you did and if you need for insurance obviously
There are heart defects that can't be fixed by diet or exercise, of course.
Eta: read thread--skip GP unless he just likes GP. No offense but most are useless for serious stuff, based on my experience anyway.
And there is no reason to not go if this has been happening 10 years.

Bob Harper (Biggest Loser Trainer) had same symptoms leading up to his heart attack. He would have died had a cardiologist not been int he gym the day he collapsed. Don’t frick around with symptoms like that. Make sure they run everyting from an EKG to a Calcium Score even if you will pay for some of the test.

most cardiologist are not drug pushers.
OP tell him to go see. Plenty of things that could be wrong from as simple as dehydration to something very serious.

Yeah except for all the statins they are shoving down unaware people’s throats. I’ll take my chances with high cholesterol vs dementia caused by statin use.

IME its usually a GP pushing statins.

I hate the doctor. I have 2 types of things. Things that could kill you and things that won't. I only really go for the first kind.
Heart stuff can kill you. Even me being a stubborn a-hole, don't mess with the stuff that can kill you.

Wouldn't hurt to establish a relationship with a cardiologist of your choice. Could come in real handy later on. None of us are invincible, no matter what we think. In the end, Mother Nature wins.

I'm sitting right now waiting to get a stress test and I'm 31. My family history is scary bad. The last 18 people (both sides) in my family that have passed, is due to heart disease.
I'm no Rich Froning, but I'm in pretty decent shape (can run a sub 28 5k and lift regularly) . Never hurts to get checked out.
