Fireplaces in S Louisiana

Why on earth is every house in S Louisiana designed with a fireplace as the centerpieces of the living room? I have been looking around at houses in BR and cannot understand why they are there.
When will I ever use it? And why should I devote a whole wall to this waste of space?

What would you rather devote a wall to?

We use ours about 5 times per year. It's definitely not a must have for me though.

If you didn’t have a fireplace where would you put your tv?

I have a gas fireplace in my new house. It's awesome. Very clean. But, coonasses love to burn shite inside and out....get use to it.

Houses without fireplaces look cheap.

I don’t have a fireplace and wish I had one. As a kid, we didn’t run the heat in our house much. We would burn fires in the fireplace and sleep in the living room. It was like a big family sleep over party. Those were some of my best memories.

It's more of a novelty I guess. I have one in mine, but I inherited the house and have never really used it.
I have an aunt (I don't really communicate with her and her family, but she is kind of nuts). In south Louisiana, she lives in a log cabin.

The fireplace is a top favorite part of my house.
LOVE fires at night.
I’ll light a fire if it gets in the 50’s. Heck, I’ve even been known to let the a/c help me get to my target temp.

Mounted on the wall at a normal eye level where you don’t have to crane your neck to see the TV??

I have 3. Kitchen, den and outside. I use all of them and they are all real masonry fireplaces with firebrick, not inserts. Probably burn 2-3 cords a year but I also cut my own firewood.

Do you think they use fireplaces year round in the north or something? We still have winter in LA. We just built a house and added a wood burning fireplace to the plans as we went along. It adds character, it’s a nice center piece and I get to use it in the winter.

We have a double sided between the living and kitchen. I want to take it out so bad and open that entire wall up with a Cypress beam and brick coloumns and my wife thinks the fireplace adds more value to the house than what I want to do.
Happy wife happy life I guess.

my parents built their house in BR in 1972
if that fireplace has been used more than three times since i'd be surprised

I think they look nice. Anytime the temp gets into the 40's, it is cool enough to have a fire in the fireplace as long as you don't insist on running the heater too.
Nothing more enjoyable to me than to sit in a leather recliner in front of the fire place and sip a little bourbon on a frosty night.
