Why on earth is every house in S Louisiana designed with a fireplace as the centerpieces of the living room? I have been looking around at houses in BR and cannot understand why they are there.

Because people like them, they have been very popular for the last several decades and builders have responded accordingly. If you want a place without one, have a house built without one.

Maybe they’re there so when we have an ice storm and lose power we can heat our house up? At least that’s what we used it for a couple times in recent years. I use mine 5-10 times a year. Definitely helps the electric bill during an unusually cold month like we had this past winter.

If you didn’t have a fireplace where would you put your tv?

Realtor: They designed each room around the TV.

Me: SOLD!

So one week a year in S. La?
Just a quick look, BR had 31 days, so 4.5 weeks in totality, when temps dipped into the 30s

So you can change your one week to 1 month

#1. Because that’s how Santa gets in the house.
#2. I like burning a fire
#3. On the off chance we have snow and ice, I really like burning a fire.

Wood-burning fireplace = wasted money. The doors are very leaky and the flume is a source of infiltration when not in use. When in use, they send most of the heat up through the chimney. This puts the house into a vacuum as air is displaced up the chimney and increases infiltration throughout the house. Thus, it's typically warm in front of fireplace, but lowers the temperature in the other rooms.

A properly designed and built wood-burner will have sealed glass doors (kept close during burning) with a dedicated fresh air source from outside. They are much more about ambiance and nostalgia than functionality.

This is almost certainly false unless you are using it as I described. Most of the time, your other rooms will get chilly or your heater will work overtime to make up for the cold air infiltration.

This and due all electric. Besides that, I have a sawmill and get all the firewood I need from it and then way to much. I just burn that off in the back 40.

Oh, don't have a tv in the living room. I have a TV room for that.
