Well just go ahead and pay to get it fixed. I had a 3.5 EcoBoost before I bought my Tundra last year. Loved the engine but once I put over 100K miles I got rid of it. I did not trust putting 125K or more miles on it without spending money on major issues.

This thread is soul crushing. I’m trading in a car for a pickup and while I like them all, I was leaning toward the 2.7L EB b/c I won’t tow over 7000 lbs and need a city driver. $4k repair bill? Used with 50k mikes they are like $25-30k. I guess I’m going back to my gut choice, the 4.6 Tundra
I want to put like 200k miles on it

The 2015 and up models don't have the same engines. The 3.5 was redesigned and the 2.7 was a net new engine. As far as longevity is concerned, who knows? They've only been out for 3-4 years. If you want 200k I'd get the V8. I drive like 8k per year so it would take me 25 years to put that many miles on a vehicle

the new trucks dont have it. just make sure it was manufactured in late 2015 AT LEAST and you are good to go.

I haven't ever owned, or known someone who owned a vehicle (except for a 3.5) that needed a timing chain replacement. I've heard of it, but have zero first-hand knowledge of it. Modern ones are typically designed to last the life of the engine

It is not a common thing for modern engines to need a timing chain/gearset at 100K.
GM 3.6, Toyota 4.0, VW/Audi, MB, Nissan all have engines that are known to have timing chains that stretch to the point of needing replacement by 100k miles. For some it's an actual part of the maintenance routine, for others (like GM's V6) it's just a crap design. So yes, some modern DOHC engines with long timing chains do commonly need replacement parts by 100K if not sooner.

Any Tundra is your best option if you are looking for 200K or more.

Curious, what makes you seek out the 4.6 over the 5.7? Way less power and similar fuel mileage. The 5.7 isn't exactly a slouch in the reliability department.

Granted it's only the STX package, but I just got one new at $30k.
Like others have said, the issues haven't popped up yet in the post 2015 models as far as I know.

Yea, you don't have to remove the cab to replace the engine lol. Unfortunately my 2013 ecoboost did grenade at 100,000 miles. Being a king ranch 4x4 it was in my best interest to replace the motor. Wish I would have had a heads up to trade it in!

just make sure to keep an oil pan under it when the cam tower starts leaking.

Yeah. The mpg on a tundra is a real bitch

If referencing the 4.0, they gave been fixed since 2010ish.
Nissans 4.0 is the best v6 currently made. By a large margin.
I'd kill to get it in a Tacoma

Ford fans are interesting. When there is a major design issue with their ford, they solve it by buying a newer ford

My buddy is on his 3rd transmission in his 2 yr old Chevy, so that sure as frick isn’t an option for me

That's because GM fans choose more extreme ways out of their disappointment. Usually involving a gas can and matches.
