You should never do anything within 1000 miles of Afghanistan.

Where on the Pamir Highway were they? A large portion of the Pamir Highway makes up the northeast border of Afghanistan/Tajikistan.

though technically this area is not "ISIS territory" the "governments" in place aren't really controlling things either.

Tajikistan is an authoritarian nearly one-party state where things like freedom of the press, public protests, and calls for inciting violence are severely restricted.

My company does a lot of work in India. Should I laugh if a colleague gets killed there because of how close to Kabul they were?

Stop being an idiot.

I support people who have an office job and want to get away from that lifestyle. If you don't have kids and you can afford not to do that....great. Where I disagree with them philosophically is biking through an ISIS territory. They wanted to do Europe and stay away from that shite, great. Kind of stupid to go anywhere near where they went.

On a funny side note, it would be great if the last picture in the series of posted photos would be some terrorist coming at them with a knife. Or maybe not but at least it would be an accurate representation of their trip.

Apparently, they have an ISIS presence as well. Who knew?

I guarantee you they were trying to tell their killers “we’re not like the bad Americans. We’re good Americans and we know you’re all good people too. You don’t have to kill us.”

I’m not celebrating their deaths, it is truly a sad statement. Stupidity, indeed, kills.

Met a British guy in India who a couple years earlier had driven from England to Mongolia I believe, camping along the way. Even went through Afghanistan. On way back by air travel they were in Russia when the hockey team plane crash occurred.

Anywho, probably a super cool trip but also tempting fate.

I hope that the company you work for provides a security detail for said colleagues. The outfit I used to work for went into Iraq right after the invasion to fix pipelines those fricktards blew up. Fun stuff working in an active war zone. We used private security with some military security but not much. The ROE gets a little fuzzy when you are trying to keep a bazillion gallons of oil from leaking into the Euphrates River.

Tajikistan is just like all of its neighboring former soviet predominately islamic countries. Sure they have a one party gov. that severely restricts press, public protests, and calls for inciting violence, but as most often the case, that only applies to opposition and western ideals.

Also, these governments aren't doing a bunch out in the remote regions of the country. these are very poor areas filled with mostly tribal groups. Their borders aren't like the US. It's not like there is a "you're leaving Afghanistan, come back and see us soon" sign or a "you've entered Tajikistan, welcome" sign.

India is wild but not private security wild. Unless if perhaps you are in Kashmir.
