My company does a lot of work in India. Should I laugh if a colleague gets killed there because of how close to Kabul they were?

Did you think Scruffy was serious about the 1000 miles thing?

They were right on the border.

Look, it sucks that they died, but why do we avoid being critical of poor decisions nowadays?

In the context of this thread, it fit right in.

Should I assume you're not being serious here too? Is that what you think I'm talking about? Is that all you think is being done ITT?

Ok, well, Scruffy was being facetious.

It was a humorous overplay of the location.

Nobody is arguing you can’t.

The argument was how poor of a decision was it.

Obviously in hindsight a bunch of keyboard warriors find it easy to judge the decision. “Stan” country, therefore, bad. Pretty low form of thinking.

I thought Scruffy was a more reasoned focus person. Guess not.

I’m not going to judge people for taking risks and living what they deem to be their best life.

They made a terrible mistake, obviously. But some people said reading this made their morning and seemed giddy. That's vile regardless of what you say to blame these people for their demise.

It’s only bc vile liberals want to open the borders to people from this area of the world.

OR the fact that US Customs probably, at the very minimum, warned them of the potential personal hazards in that part of the world.

OR how going for a leisurely hike or bike ride thru any dangerous area, in any part of the world, is generally not a good idea.

OR how they don't speak the same language as the natives, thus having no way to "start a discussion", much less, say, "hey bros, we're cool. we are all about your lifestyle and support your personal beliefs"

OR how for the last 17 years, since 9/11, it is generally known from coast to coast, border to border, spread by all forms of media: that ISIS = bad people.

OR how the primary religion in that part of the world, for the most part hates western civilization, western culture, and the skin color that represents said western civilization.

how are all of those factors simply forgone when making this decision?
Did they draw up a Pro's and Con's list somewhere? (Because I would love to see what they listed in the Pro's section.)

a truly noble mindset. here's a slow golf clap from me ,from my desk. BUT this couple, totally worth judging their decision making process. to, at the very least, learn from it.

Was it not on the Afghan border?

How is that not a poor decision?

Is the risk 100%? No.

It’s like the guy who was living around bears and was eaten.

He did it for years before he was killed.

Was he not making a poor decision?

The US rates Tajikistan at the lowest rating in terms of danger for travel.

And Tajikistan is very pro Western, even to the point of telling women to not wear hijabs and for men to shave their beards.

Yeah, well I think anyone with any understanding of geopolitics could have told them there was some elevated level of risk here.
