May be a dumb question but in WWII, why were Germany and Russia on opposing sides?

Naziism and Communism are not very different ideologies both a variation of left wing socialist totalitarianism.

Seems like Hitler and Stalin should have much more in common and would both have been better served as allies rather than enemies.

Was it just ego that would not let them work together as both wanted total control. Or is there some underlying political difference between the 2 that I am missing?

The same reason every war is fought
Land, money, pussy, and power

Butler crossed Stalin. IMHO it was his greatest mistake beside fricking with England. If Germany didn’t make the Neapolitan mistake of fighting Russia in winter and he leaves England alone, the Nazis would still rule all of Western Europe.

Hitler thought Stalin's people were sub-human. That sort of killed any chance at a long term partnership.

I have wondered about the hate Hitler had for communist as well. Could be Lenin was Jewish.

Stalin did admire Hitler for the "night of the long knives"

They were allies when the war started and divided Poland between them.
Russia did not want to fight Germany their hand was forced.

Socialism, in principle, is not totalitarian. Human nature begets totalitarianism when it is put into practice but fundamentally it is not a totalitarian ideology.

Facism, by definition, is totalitarian.

On an even more fundamental level, the Nazi party supported private enterprise and business in certain sectors of society recognizing it as more efficient. Socialism really as one of its its defining principles opposes the privatization of industry.

On a very superficial level, sure the communists and the Nazis appear similar in some ways. Ideologically however they are diametrically opposes in many ways.

Another factor was the ethnic/racial aspect. The Nazis loathed the Slavs and Jews that so heavily populated western Russia.

Read Mein Kampf - Hitler was very clear that the largest threat to Germans and European civilization was Communism which at its very heart was inspired by the racial values of Jews and Slavs.

The variation of left wing socialist totalitarianism while true has no consequence on the fundamental difference on what the most important identification is, race/nationality or class.

Besides that the two countries could likely of had a war no matter what their ideologies were for economic and political domination of central and eastern Europe.

This is where libs try to tell us Fascism is a right wing creation. As if more government is a right wing principle.

When your belief system only includes left wing socialist totalitarianism, the enemy is the guy that wants to do left wing socialist totalitarianism in a different way.

Hitler/Nazis were about German/World domination.

They were NOT about political ideology.

Snarky comments welcome

Germany and Russia fight each other as a tradition.

Hitler never hid the fact that he believed Germany’s “living space” lay in the east. They came to their non-aggression pact only because it suited their mutual interest at that time: it allowed Germany to invade Poland without interference from the Russians, and it bought Russia time build up their armed forces because they knew it was just a matter of time before they went to war with Germany.

Hitler believed the Slavs to be inferior; he had no particular beef with France or Britain and wanted to avoid war with them if possible while achieving his goals in the east.

One issue that's not often discussed is ethnicity.
We all know that Jews were a minority in Germany and they were extremely successful financially. That caused envy.

But what few realize is that long before WWII the Germans who lived in Russia were a minority that were extremely successful financially. The Russians hated them for that. There was ethnic animosity from way back.

Had little to do with ideology. Both the Germans and the Russians wanted to conquer Europe. Neither wanted to be conquered by the other. The Germans got beat back and the Russians moved in after the German collapse and snatched as much territory as possible. It's more cultural than economic.

1) Hitler perceived communism as being a Jewish movement. He was opposed to them because they were trying to get a foot in German politics (there was a large communist movement in Germany prior to Hitler's rise). He also didn't much care about communism's internationalist ideas as Hitler was a nationalist.

2) Germany and Russia had just fought a massive war (WWI) and there would have been little chance of them becoming allies at that point in time.

3) Communists aren't necessarily racists. Hitler's ideology was based on German identity and to a lesser extent "Aryan racial superiority" (though Hitler wasn't as fanatical about the latter as some of his lieutenants like Himmler and Rosenberg).
