Burt,
You have faith in the plan & trust it ?
Going to push back on the coach?

40 miles a week for the next two months. Do you trust it? Asked him about peak miles "I dunno, we've never worked together before"
I feel like the dude lied to me on the phone screening. Thank god I'm in a position to absorb an expensive little mistake like this.
I'll do his little plan and I'll also do extra non strava miles. No watch.

Without a solid explanation and reason for why the plan is so simplistic, I would have a hard time trusting it.
It may be as simple as needing time to learn each other but whatever it is should be communicated.

I gave him two and a half years of my running history. He obviously didn't look at it.

That’s disappointing. Seems like he ignored anything you sent him upfront.
You should throw in a few comments like “wow this seems like low mileage if I want to run sub a 2:30 marathon”.

What’s the rest of it, just garbage miles?
That seems really odd.

It sounds like he is starting you at the beginning of a training cycle. Is that what you wanted?
Posted on 5/14/20 at 9:10 pm to BurtReynoldsMustache
You’ve got to communicate with him and let him know how advanced you are.
I mean, if you wanna slum it with me, that’s fine, but you’re faster than that.

You sure you didn’t accidentally send him mine?

Helluva a racing season there.

I may be way overshooting what I can do, so we’ll see! I don’t really have audacious time goals for any of those races. I’d like to snag a 2 hour half and feel in complete control of the full, but I just want to finish the ultras.

A beginning of a training cycle for me, and he and I discussed this, was 60 miles with a continued buildup. Summer is a building phase every coach worth a damn uses summer like this. There is no build. He wants to take me to the mid forties until July then take another week off. This would not give me the opportunity to peak for a November marathon.
It’s like he doesn’t respect the training and work I put in and wants to tear down the foundation. He’s zone 2ing me bruh. Nothing but garbage miles.
He and I have a talk on Monday. I'm going to tell him his plan is not what I'm looking for and thanks but no thanks. Then I'm going to buy a Lydiard book and follow it.
No hard feelings, but this plan just feels like he's covering his arse or something. No risk; very cookie cutter.
I should have just sent you the money. I'm sure you could come up with something more inspired than what I got.

Yeah. I would want to take advantage of all the work in during the winter and Spring. If you’ve been able to handle that much volume without injury, I don’t see the point of cutting back that much. I get the strides and hills but not the 60% volume cut.
Burt, are you familiar with Brad Hudson?

Yeah, that's a good callout. All the proceeds go to the elite training bucket he coaches. I was looking for a coach that did the Lydiard thing, don't know if that's his style, but what I'm coming to find out is if you are a novice or a pro, get a coach. If you are advanced or sub elite, get a book.

I’m a performance-focused coach with a variety of influencers in my training methods. For workouts, I use both heart rate and paces with the cardinal rule of stress and adaptation. I enjoy getting as much feedback from my athletes as possible in order to adjust training individually. Training is more than just what you do, but rather about what your body can absorb. Each training session should have a specific purpose and I work with my athletes to build a complete plan that makes sense for them. I enjoy helping other runners reach their goals and helping athletes see the whole picture of training, including the mental aspect, nutrition, sleep, and recovery. I look forward to hopefully working together and helping you reach your full potential.

I know that he also believes in coaching runners to become their own coaches too. He is a guru of sorts when it comes to adaptive training. The foundation of his philosophy is definitely Lydiard.
I know we are different runners, but If I had your talent and determination, that is who I would seek out. That is coming from a runner and a psychologist. Worth a look at least.

For sure. Our philosophies are different but so are our goals. Neither goal more noble than the other. I appreciate that you take investment in the well being of the runner holistically, and I say that as BAA where they teach us to be sociopaths.

Maybe in the extreme. There’s certainly nothing unhealthy about being competitive and a little paranoid of others. The competitor works around the clock to get an edge over his opponents though discipline and a strong work ethic. The sociopath puts the opponent out of business by paying people to post negative reviews about them or breaking their knee cap in an alleyway before a competition.

Does anyone here use or have experience with the Fenix 6? I see Garmin dropped the price on it and I've been eyeing it for a while. I don't cycle or swim laps, but I do enjoy hiking and will try to hot the ski slopes next season. Also I'm probably a small section of the market that wants a device that does running and golf really well, and I see the Forerunner 945 and Fenix 6 appear to have the best options.
My fear is this might be too much device for me, as I currently use a Forerunner 35 and haven't really done any pacing or super deep training techniques which something something like this offers.

Coach's plan just came through. He's going to train me like I'm a beginner.
This is what my guy did too FWIW. You are obviously WAY ahead of me in all terms.
We haven't gotten to the speed work yet. We've been building miles over the first two months. I presume that once I get my base built (30 miles/week) that we will start working on my goal of 7 min miles.

Your run elevation is going to be amazing. All the cats you see getting 7000ft a week in NO are rocking the Fenix.
