The Novablast are some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. I wear them for work. But when I tried training with them they felt heavy and didn’t have any “energy return.” I gave the Nike Zoom X Invincible a shot. Not only do they provide incredible cushion but the spring and energy return is amazing. I’d given up on Nike trainers about 10 years ago but gave these a shot. Glad I did.

Interesting, and while the vast majority of the reviews I’ve read love the Novablast 2, I’ve definitely come across a few that mentioned exactly what you did about the energy return or “pop” not being there.
Same on Nike, I haven’t tried a running shoe from them for years because they always felt too tight/narrow on my foot. Which is strange because when I played basketball growing up I only wore nikes. All other brands were too wide, and I’d develop blisters under calluses from my foot moving around in the shoe. Because of that I always assumed I had a fairly narrow foot, and that Nikes would be best for me. I wonder if years of wearing flip flops, and topsiders just flattened out my foot a bit compared to when I was a teenager playing basketball. Not sure if changes like that occur in feet over time.
In any case, thanks for the rec and I’ll add those to my list to try on.

Most reviews I’ve read on the Novablast say it’s bouncy to the point of instability. Think it’s all dependent on the type of runner you are though. I imagine the Novablast to be similar to the Nike Epic React which was my favorite shoe. I’ve tried the Nike Peg Turbo (ZoomX) and found it was too soft, but I think I’m a heavier runner.

Yup. Time to slog out everything at snail pace and count down the days til October.
I’m still trying to figure out my legs/feet. Some days I get super shin-splinty, some days my right foot goes numb or feels like it wants to, same days my hips are bugging me. Don’t know if it was being sedentary for 2+ months during tax season, shoes, socks, or all of the above…but I’m tired of having crappy runs.

I have found MANY excuses to not go for a run or sign up for races this year. Generally it's been too cold/windy/snowy to get out after work or on a weekend. My summer calendar is filling up with obligations that lead me to rethink plans and races. Now it's COVID.
I'm telling ya, every day another excuse. We need Burt back to motivate our pitiful runs.

I run Monday, Wednesday, and Friday before the kids get up, outside, no matter what the weather is. I slow down when it heats up and for the first few runs after I donate blood. I run 3.5 miles because that's what I have time for. I had to learn to jog in my 20s, I would run too fast and die too soon every time at first. Now that I can do my 3.5, I have no idea how some of you do much longer runs, and faster. I'm done when I hit my driveway, there is no more to give. I think I'm just not built for distance, the lungs don't cut it. I enjoy the discipline of the routine though. I haven't had an alcoholic beverage on a Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday in years because I know even 1 will make running suck more, and I'm going to run. I just hope I can stay healthy enough to keep it going.

Yeah, the running too fast has always been my problem I think, or to put it another way, running too hard. I’m sure I’ve never been guilty of running too fast.
I’m trying to get into running again for the first time in years, as a guy approaching middle age, and after researching running plans a bit I’m realizing that I fell into the category of person that pushed it too hard, too fast, and never allowed my body to build a proper aerobic base. Instead my heart rate was likely always at an anaerobic level, and i’d end up straining something eventually, or just burn out too soon. As a result I was never really able to put together longer runs.
I think the hardest part right now is having to put aside ego, and be ok with slow arse runs, and trust that in time my heart will start to get stronger, and then in several months of building a solid base, hopefully injury free, I’ll start to see those runs get quicker, with the same level heart rate.

I'm sure I can look this up, but if my run is in the 30 minute range, what do I want for my average HR? Or can it vary a lot person to person, by age too I would imagine? I'm 170-180 bpm. Like I said, my lungs suck. Or blow, one of those.

A number of factors will play into this, including your age, current fitness level, the weather, your stress levels, how well you slept, etc.
In general though 170-180 bpm does seem high. This is coming from someone who pretty much ran all of their runs in the 170 bpm range for 2 years. In my experience, getting the bulk of my miles in 145-160 bpm has really benefitted me. I don’t feel beat to hell when I finish runs and I was able to PR every race distance I ran this past fall/winter. Everyone’s different though.
ETA: what may be most important is how do you feel during and after those runs?
